Amazon.co.uk Review

With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, Derailed is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like Fatal Attraction, it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with Collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, Derailed marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller Evil was a Best Foreign Film Oscar-nominee. --Jeff Shannon

A terrific thriller with some excellent performances
Review date: 2008-07-19 Rating: 10 out of 10

I really enjoyed this film, I've seen hundreds of films and love thrillers, but I can honestly say that I've never seen a film quite like this before.

I guess this is a thriller that's also a psychological thriller with some really good twists and turns.

I do wonder sometimes if Clive Owen is truly a lead actor or not, but here he proves that he is in what could well be his best performances that I've seen of his to date, Jennifer Aniston is also in fine form in a role completely away from any other role I've seen her in, then there's the performance of Vincent Cassel who's superb as the villain, for me he's the best screen villain that I've seen for sometime.

It's difficult to say anything else about the film as it could give the game away, I try not to build up my hopes before watching films as you're always going to be disappointed from time to time at least, but this is an excellent film that I found riveting and it's rare for me to watch a film for the first time and find myself pulled in like this did, I'm very pleased to have added this to my collection.

Keeps you on the edge of your seat
Review date: 2008-05-10 Rating: 10 out of 10

I totally agree with another reviewer here about not listening to critics reviews. Afterall, they told me Perfume, Story of a Murderer was good and it was one of the most dismal films I have ever seen. Derailed on the other hand, is not.

Charles Schine is a tired Ad executive, who's marriage is in a rut and their only child in desperate need of expensive medication. On his daily commute, Charles meets Lucinda and soon begins to consider having an affair with her. This leads to violence and blackmail.

I don't want to give anything more away, but I found the story line original and, at times, truely frightening. Jennifer Anniston is excellent, as is Clive Owen. The added plot twists only add to the film.

One of the best thrillers I have seen- well worth a watch.

Well presented and entertaining

Derailed is the latest offering from Friends star Jennifer Aniston and it is a good one, in very much her first serious role Aniston performs admirably. Derailed is a tense and gripping action thriller that follows the story of married family man Charles played by Clive Owen who one day decides to act on his males urges following a chance meeting with Aniston's character Lucinda. The story is not overly complex but does contain a few twists to keep you on your toes, I really can not say more without giving the plot away but would happily recommend this film to almost anyone. The acting is of good quality and the pace quick making for an enjoyable evenings entertainment, as with almost any of these action thrillers Derailed has its flaws but these are not enough to ruin the film. Overall Derailed is well worth a look, the movie is not ground breaking but well presented and entertaining, 7/10. 4 Stars

Really quite good

Jen is a really good straight actress - wasn't my choice of movie, but throughly enjoyed it. Good story and interesting twists.

Devoid of any originality

I've only got myself to blame. The reviews I'd read for this film in the press hadn't been positive, but being a fan of Clive Owen and going on the majority of positive reviews here on Amazon I took a chance and bought it. While the performances are perfectly fine, Clive Owen is amiable enough while Jenifer Aniston in the temptress role isn't half bad, the story is inescapably...cliché, dull, often laughable and painfully predictable. I wonder if I was watching a different film to everyone else here.

It's completely clear almost from the outset of `Derailed' how the film will play out and especially the excruciatingly transparent twist that will eventually be delivered. It's an idea that's been done to death in film and considering how little `Derailed' deviates from the familiar `unsuspecting good guy gets conned by crooks working all the angles' formula, I struggle to imagine how this film could ever have made in the first place.

Clive Owen is miscast in the everyman role, because his off-screen persona is one who's far too intelligent to be duped by such an obvious con as the one the criminals employ to relieve him of his life savings, increasingly so as his character's predicament spirals further and further out of control and he seems only mildly inconvenienced. The locations (or lack there of) in the film lack continuity, very likely because `Derailed' was filmed in both Chicago and London. While the outside scenes appear authentic and suitably American, the interior scenes (particularly the home and office of Clive Owen's character) look as if they've come straight out of `Bridget Jones's Diary'. Add into the mix a performance from Vincent Cassel that's overly-melodramatic and the eventual product isn't in the least bit believable, tense, or even enjoyable. If you've never watched a thriller in your life you may glean some amount of enjoyment from `Derailed', but for fans of the genre it's one to avoid, because undoubtedly you'll have seen it all many, many times before.
