A movie for grown up kids!
Review date: 2006-09-23 Rating: 10 out of 10
Let me start by saying this movie was my favourite film as a child! Sure it may have been made a number of years ago but all the best films are. An enchanting film worthy of any young childs dvd collection.
The film is easy for kids to follow and has some extra-ordinary special effects of its time!! Its not a epic blockbuster but it is a great film, i would recommend it to all those parents out there who can stick it on and sit their kids infront of the telly for 2 hours while they get on with other things.

Cook rulesReview date: 2006-08-18 Rating: 6 out of 10Well, where do I begin?
This should be in a bargin bucket at WOOLWORTHS...however, SUPERGIRL isn't without her charms.
The storyline is dreadful, the flying looks like it predates The Adventures of Superman from the 50's, and I was very confused at the idea behind Kara's travel through space - it looked like the director was on speed.
It is however continiously hillarious, when Kara bursts out of the pond in her SUPERGIRL outfit seems totally unreasonable. But very amusing to listen to the commentry on the DVD, and how proud the director is of his creation.
Faye Dunaway didn't really do herself any favours, as her acting is appauling. And the girl that plays Lucy Lane should be shot. How the hell did she get cast?
But what I have failed to mention is the brilliance of Peter Cook. He makes you want to keep watching to see if he could be any worse in the following scene, also because you wouldn't believe that someone could make that much of a cock of themselves - he's a comic genius. My favourite quote being "What's going on? Hey! What's going on?" - Cook does it with so little acting ability you wonder if the casting agent had actually ever seen him before.
In honesty, this film is worth having a good laugh at on a sunday afternoon with your mates and a few beers.
I pray they make a sequel sometime in the future. My love goes out to you PETERIt's a bird, she's not plain, it's.......SupergirlReview date: 2006-08-14 Rating: 8 out of 10Alright if you compare it to Superman I & II it fares quite badly, as many films would, but it is far better than the last 2 Superman movies.
Supergirl travels to Earth to recover the omegahedron, the power source of her home planet that is being used by Faye Dunaway as the over the top witch Selena bent on taking over the world during Superman's absence sorting out an intergalactic war. It IS pure high camp, with Dunaway, Brenda Vaccaro and Peter Cook all hamming it up well as pantomime villains.
The only other characters who are memorable are Maureen Teefy as Lucy Lane, Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen and Peter O'Toole in the final part of the movie.
Supergirl herself never quite gets to show the strength from the comics. There is the nutkick to one of the truckers who confronts her and wants a good time, a few minor set pieces but no real Superman style KAPOW moments.
It is very effects driven at the end as Dunaway unleashes her black magic. Supergirl despatches a minor invisible demon, half-cousin to the monster from the Id from Forbidden Planet then gets transported to the phantom zone. Her escape from the phantom zone aided by O'Toole who dies just as they near freedom. The final set piece with Selena bringing forth an elemental demon is a little weak, it looks OK but it would have been better if the creature was more physical and better animated and not just a growling shadow.
All in all I did enjoy it and Helen Slater was good in the role apparently turning up for the casting session dressed as Supergirl. What a shame that the extras that appeared on several versions, notably the 2 disc NTSC version, including the audition clips were not included here. It is always annoying when a studio releases a DVD of a film over 20 years old and does not make it a definitive version, it smacks of a possible future re-release. There were rumours of a Super series similar to the Planet of the Apes ape-head set featuring the 4 Christopher Reeve Superman movies, Supergirl as well as the 50's serials with George Reeves and maybe some of the cartoon series. I'd hate to think that Warners would pull a stunt like that.
Jerry Goldsmith's theme works well and is a five star score with slow romantic passages as well as the main Supergirl theme and the sinister phantom zone themes.
If it had the "Making of...." and a few more extras it would be worth 5 stars, as it is I would give it a generous 4 stars as at just under 2 hours it is good value for money.supergirlReview date: 2006-07-20 Rating: 8 out of 10a great film, like the superman ones but with a female doing the flying around ,good story .there are some films when growing up that stick with you for life this one did,and i even have a daughter named after supegirl[ kara ], which now she enjoys watching the film as much as i do.Great film for kids and adults alike.Review date: 2006-07-03 Rating: 10 out of 10I first watched this film as a child, it was one of my all time favs at the time. It is an interesting twist of the Superman saga. In the story Superman's female cousin comes to earth to recover a powerful power source that is vital for the survival of the alien biodome where she lives. As the power source comes to earth it is discovered by a struggling witch, played by Faye Dunaway who uses its power to increase her magical powers. As the witches power grows she enslaves the city in which she lives with her power. It is up to Supergirl to survive and adapt to living in modern America and battle with the evil witch before her family in the alien biodome die.
There is naturally a love interest for Supergirl, a hunky young gardener that also has caught the eye of Faye Dunaway's character. The acting is a little corny at times but Faye Dunaway's performance as the megalomaniacal witch is great and very memorable!
This is a great film for kids and enjoyable for adults too! and availble on Region 2 at long last! If you want a nice twist on the Superman story and some truely wicked bad guys then this is for you! Oh and if you are wondering, Supergirl is a very attractive young blond.
