Googie gives you the shivers

My title phrase is not a condemnation folks. This was a personal nickname I introduced to my freinds at school in the 70's when we all watched this brilliant programme on a Friday night. It was my own piece of rhyming slang for Googie Withers. What a find this was. I wonder if there are any intentions of releasing the further series? I can't remember how long it ran for but what memories this boxed set brings back to me. There's one episode that makes me think the seeds of Political Correctness were being propagated in 1974. It's on the final disc in an episode with the trendy prison visitor showing contempt for Faye Boswell and her system and finding petty excuses for criminals being victims. Worth the money if you're in your 40's and remember it. Better than the usual trash that BBC and ITV now pour out. Send back your TV licences and watch DVD's. I have.

A must for the fan of the Prison Drama, not as campy (as fantastic as it is!) and OTT as Bad girls, shares some of the real, gritty bits that serious Prisoner Cell Block H fans will understand!

Hope they release the rest of the series...

Within These Walls Complete Series 1
Review date: 2008-04-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

I remembered this series for its haunting music and gritty realism but was very young when it was first shown,so buying this DVD has been a joy and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
Googie Withers is great,as caring progressive Governor,Faye Boswell,as well as being a very good actress,Ms Withers is such a striking good looking woman, she lights up the screen whenever she appears.
This first series is from 1974 and I was impressed by the editing for such an old shown, half the fun is spotting actors who went on to even more popular roles,Coronaton Street's Helen Worth(Gail Platt)and Susie Birchall(Cheryl Murray)and Eastenders'Pat(Pam St.Clement)appears as a rough, slow witted prisoner, who cannot control her temper and Dr.Who no6,Colin Baker plays an art teacher.
Kathy Staff known as Doris Luke in both versions of Crossroads and of course, known best as Nora Batty from "Last of The Summer Wine" plays a prisoner, who starts to respect herself after years of being treated like non person by her husband.
Viwers of the orginal Crossroads will also spot Carolyn Jones(Sharon Metcalfe) very differnet from her glamour days on Crossroads.
The stories deal with pressures on the staff,Faye fighting for change and dealling with staff, set in their ways including Mrs Armitage(Mona Bruce)and the stories also of course deal with the prisoners problems but not to the same degree as Prisoner Cell Block H and Bad Girls would later do.
Give this show a look,it really sets the way for later gritty prison dramas,Within These Walls carried on after Googie Withers left and there were two more governors before the show finished, here's hoping the rest of the series comes out on DVD.

Excellent!............i need not say anymore.Much more realistic and true to life storylines than the 'other two' womens prison programmes which followed in later years. At first i did think that the plots were focasing on just mainly the staff at 'HM Stone Park' and were very dull and streched out but........how wrong could i have been after halfway through the second episode 'lesson number one'.I am hooked now and i have watched this dvd over and over again,so all i can say is well done 'Prime television' for releasing this and please hurry up and bring out the other four series.Perhaps I.T.V might consider reviving this 'exeptionaly good drama'

Brilliant

Bought the DVD and converted it to NTSC. (I'm in Canada). Watched the show originally in 1970's, loved it then and love it more now. Every minute of every DVD is like hopping in a time machine. Excellent and worth every penny.
