I agree with Michael Bruno - You've started the case very well, Michael. The DVD version should be avoided at all costs-the original tv version is the only way to see "Eboli", believe me (*and Michael) - The DVD is total rubbish - one (significant) hour truncated from the original - well DUHHH - is there anyone there who could intelligenly take this moronity - we're talking about one of the great works of the twentieth century - only Heimat's in the same league -

Lost scenes ruined an excellent film.Review date: 2007-06-20 Rating: 4 out of 10I own the VHS version and have watched it many times. It's a beautiful and very accurate portrayal of life in the mountain villages during that period in Italy's history. I wanted the film on DVD and bought it. To my great disappointment, I found that many scenes present in the VHS version had been cut. This ruined the film for me. Those scenes were a very important part of the story, portraying some special times in village life and the isolation felt by Carlo Levi. I still cannot believe that a DVD version would be cut! Why I wonder? I treasure my VHS version and hope it doesn't wear out. The DVD is pretty poor in comparison. Italian masterclassReview date: 2006-09-07 Rating: 10 out of 10Right from the opening notes of a score that is as beautiful as it is haunting, this film adaptation of the book is utterly mesmerising. In depicting the internal exile that the Fascist regime imposed on its opponents in Italy prior to WWII, the film delivers a remarkably powerful tale of a man and a village and the changing nature of their relationship as the distant world to which they are so tenuously connected closes in and changes the lives of each and every individual. A visually, emotionally and intellectually satisfying film that, in places, almost slows time to a halt, but never ceases to engross the viewer for a moment.
