Amazon.co.uk Review
As befits the BBC's reputation for producing some of the world's best nature documentaries, the five-disc set Planet Earth is an epic travelogue, focussing on different ecologies and the unique animals that inhabit them. Once again, Sir David Attenborough provides the narration, as the cameras fly across the surface of the earth, zooming in to give us a bug's eye view one minute, zooming out to give us an eagle's perspective the next. The BBC's cameramen filmed more than 200 locations, resulting in some truly spectacular footage, much of which has never before been seen--such as the rare sight of an endangered snow leopard hunting in the Himalayas, or great white sharks leaping from the water as they hunt. The creators of Planet Earth endured some of the world's most hostile environments, from the deepest ocean depths to an Antarctic blizzard to a fetid, cockroach- and bat-infested cave, just to grab a few moments of film; it's worth watching the "Making of" shorts that accompany each episode, in order to see just what lengths they had to go to. The three extra episodes here--Planet Earth: The Future--provide a sobering finale, as Sir David practically pleads with viewers to cherish the animals that we share this planet with, before it's too late. --Ted Kord
Spectacular images, bad music, and wrong message overall
Review date: 2008-03-08 Rating: 8 out of 10
It is a collection of the best images of Nature I have ever seen and this is the only reason for the 4 stars. Every single DVD offers incredible and often unusual views of Nature which are really breathtaking. However, the generally useless music theme covers what it would have been great to hear (Nature!) and all along the DVDs the narration tends to give a completely wrong message. Life it is NOT hard in some harsh places in the world or during some season simply because life there IS adapted to that environment and those conditions. Life would not be easier for a penguin without the long polar winter. Life of a penguin IS the polar winter! Excellent whatsoever: just watch it with your kids and explain few things...!

Best nature documentary ever!Review date: 2008-02-25 Rating: 10 out of 10I've seen several natur documentaries also from David Attenborough now and this is definetly the most spectaculair one. Even if you're not a fan of nature you'll still enjoy it. It shows you things you would have never imagined of being on this earth. Also fun for the whole family!Simply EpicReview date: 2008-02-05 Rating: 10 out of 10Every schoolchild should be made to watch this awe-inspiring documentary series. Each frame is breath-takingly beautiful or fascinating, and it really does renew a sense of marvel at the world in which we are so lucky to live in. Hate to gush, but it deserves it! A true masterpiece.BREATHTAKINGLY SPECTACULAR !!Review date: 2008-01-22 Rating: 10 out of 10WOW!! The content on these DVDs is sheer, raw brilliance. I'd never come across this set before, and was randomly surfing the net when I saw it on Amazon. The reviews intrigued me; "can any set of DVDs be THIS good?" I asked myself. I finally could resist no longer; I clicked the "buy" button, waited till they were delivered, and eagerly placed the first disc into my DVD player - only to have to invest in a new table soon after because of the force with which my jaw hit it when I witnessed, with my own two eyes, the sheer awe-inspiring beauty of the content. Enough to bring tears to your eyes - the raw power, the naked beauty, the silent, poetic elegance, the mesmerising, gasping wonder of all varieties of different creatures we share the planet with is brought before us, on our screens, in extremely high quality visual imagery.
Empire penguins huddling through the coldest winter (-70C) on the planet, crocodiles devouring thirsty wildebeest, the annual migratory patterns of millions of seabirds, hungry lions hunting an African elephant, wild Bactrian camels eating snow, a mile high mountain of bat poo in a Borneo cave - every inch of which is covered by cockroaches, a terrifying vampire squid 2 miles deep on the bed of the Pacific Ocean - these are just some of the amazing content / creatures you will see on this set. All I can wrap up with is this: don't faff about, just click the "buy" button and watch it - we've not all been paid by the BBC to write reviews like this!
Just GreatReview date: 2008-01-08 Rating: 10 out of 10I can't praise this series enough. Along with its companion Blue Planet, these are the best wildlife documentaries ever produced. A must have for any one who has any interest in the beautiful and amazing planet we live on.
