One to avoidReview date: 2007-01-24 Rating: 4 out of 10If you liked the original merlin and were hoping for more of the same then avoid this very poor "sequel".
Set in an alternate reality to the first. Merlin is almost a completly different character and is no longer identifiable as he was before and makes a very brief appearence in the movie. The same can be said for Miranda Richardson's Lady in the lake, who like all the characters seriously lacks any depth.
The storyline itself leaves alot to be desired at is largely sporadic with the editors seemling deciding to change the mood and direction along the way. The film does come into its own a little at the start of the second part but its short lived.
The quality of special effects, sets and camera work are very poor throughout and will disillusion anyone trying to get into the story who has seen a movie after the 1980's.
If you must, rent this film but don't expect to enjoy it.Does it even follow on from the first Merlin?Review date: 2006-06-11 Rating: 2 out of 10Rant Part 1:
No special effects = awful film. What made the first film legendary was the stunning special effects and the emphasis on the spirit world and magical folklore. This is a hollywood spawn attempt at British Folklore and the director (clearly not the same person as the director of the first Merlin), should be shot.
Rant Part 2:
If this is a continuation of the first Merlin, one or two things failed to make themselves apparent. 1) Where is Nimoway? 2) Why is the LAdy of the Lake portrayed as Evil when she was good in the first?
I would advise you to watch it. It'll make you appreciate the first one that much more. But rent the second one. You won't want such a travesty in your home!By the end I was shouting at the TVReview date: 2006-05-15 Rating: 2 out of 10I wonder if the writers of this depressingly bad sequel to the brilliant 'Merlin' actually watched the origional. It was like they had thrown away the origional concept and decided to change it all around. Firstly, if you cannot get the origional Arthur, then please don't confuse us by bringing him back from the dead. Secondly, The Lady of the Lake is a) meant to be dead, and b) is NOT evil at all in the original and there is no explaination as to why she is now.
Nimue was such an important role in the original, so why no mention of her.
I won't spoil the ending for those who are yet to watch the film, but considering the end of the first film, it really makes no sense at all, and just left me screaming at the TV.
The acting of Sam Neill is brilliant, and Miranda Richardson is always superb in these dark roles, but I have to question why they read the script and still did it despite it's contrasts to the brilliant story of 'Merlin'.
By all means, however, watch the DVD, It's fun just to pick it apart!Horrible!!!Review date: 2006-05-11 Rating: 2 out of 10I really loved the original "MERLIN" film and expected this to be more or less a follow up. Not at all, there's no continuity, no decent acting (Miranda Richardson stole the show in the first film,in this one I think she just needed the money)
A talking pig (one for the childrens film foundation?) A girl who looked liked a girl & talked like a girl but pretended to be a boy & everyone thought was a boy (are they all insane/blind?)
And lets not forget the incidental music which all the time is telling us "hey this isn't serious it's meant to be funny"
The concept of the first film was a loose adaption of Mallory's Morte D'Arthur and was,all in all, an excellent film. This is just a pile of ..... (insert your own adaption there)
Sequels are often produced as a follow up to an excellent premier - these guys are just raking in money under false pretences - DON'T BUY IT (or even rent it)
