Martin Shaw in Top Form as Dalgliesh

Martin Shaw displays his versatility as an actor in the role of Adam Dalgliesh, bringing dignity and gravitas to this double feature. As in Judge John Deed, he has the ability to grip one as the main character around which the others revolve. A more contemplative persona in this, reflective of his position as a top ranking detective, these atmospheric and absorbing dramas keep the viewer guessing what will happen next. Recommended.

Murder of a master detective

How could anyone ever have believed that Martin Shaw could replace somebody like Roy Marsden? The former Dalgliesh was all P.D. James requested him to be: he was dead sharp and looked it, he rarely spoke and you paid attention to his every word, and on top of this he had the understated sexappeal which producers look for when they cast James Bond.
Martin Shaw, the actor who impersonates Commander Dalgliesh in those two stories is nothing of the kind. He comes across as a dull guy and you wonder all along what Emma might see in him in the Murder Room and how the hell such an empty, boring character could ever write a decent poem. True there are moments when the expression of his face is more promising and this must be what determined the casting crew to give him the role, but you are regularly disappointed within the next two minutes of the movie. What a pity the thrilling P.D. James stories were wasted in such a manner. Emma is wonderful and so are other actors but the heart of those stories is their detective and Martin Shaw does not seem to have a heart.
Let's hope the writer won't allow her next stories to be murdered in such a fashion and that they find a better actor for the role.
