Outstanding police drama - you've got to love Andy
Review date: 2007-03-17 Rating: 10 out of 10
The third series of NYPD blue saw the show become far more episodic in structure than the towering first season or the David Caruso episodes of the second season. There are a few episodes that don't start 'previously on NYPD Blue' in Arthur Fancy's manly voice, which means they are total stand alones, not part of a developing story arc.
It's still a five star. Series one was probably a five plus, but no matter. The quality of the acting and the storytelling is breath-takingly brilliant, held together by a towering performance by Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz, the alcoholic cop with a real flair for the bon mot.
The best episodes are at the end, when Andy's son - imaginatively handled Andy junior - is killed. Franz gets to act his socks off in a performance of such moving pathos it's like watching your Dad cry.
Gordon Clapp, as nervous, allergy-plagued detective Medavoy also shines and Jimmy Smits, probably realising he's walked into the hardest place to impress since Lee Strasberg closed his studio, is suitably buttoned down as the romantic lead and all round good guy, Bobby Simone.
NYPD Blue is pretty right wing. It is. The skells are portrayed as pure evil, an evil that is not grounded in their social circumstances or personal issues. The detectives are all good guys. The bosses are all weasels, with the exception of Fancy. It is not a compromised moral landscape like 'The Shield' or 'The Wire,' but it oozes gritty realism. Beating on them, denying them their rights to legal counsel (or medical treatment in the opener) is ok, because they are bad!
My son watched Sipowicz slapping a guy round the head and asked me 'can the police do that?'. Er....no son.
However the drama is so convincing that such issues can be put aside.
Despite Franz, acting honours, in my opinion, go to Monti Sharp, who, in the episode Head Case, produces a confession of searing intensity. He is not a psychopath - a charming Anthony Hopkins - he is a psychotic, delusional killer. And he brings it off in a stunning sequence.
Guy hasn't gone on to do much, but he was brilliant in this.
Of course you should buy it.

Definite must buy for fans of cop showsReview date: 2006-06-07 Rating: 10 out of 10NYPD Blue is by far the best cop show around. This is the daddy of all cop shows. This is the 2nd series that Jimmy Smits was in and his character is well and truelly bedded in and I don't think there is a better anti-hero cop than Dennis Franz's Sipowicz. I can't strees how good this tv series is. A definite must buy!!!!!simply the bestReview date: 2006-04-20 Rating: 10 out of 10Finally season 3 of the best american tv drama has arrived,we can only hope that subsequent seasons, will be released,as quickly as possible,if you have never seen this show, you are in for a treat, the acting and production values, are way ahead of any other american import, buy it, sit back and enjoy,i am sure you will be engrossed in the lives of sipowicz and simone, and remember the best seasons have still to comeold friendsReview date: 2006-04-15 Rating: 10 out of 10this season of nypd blue is a little deceptive. after quickly ploughing through the first 2 seasons its been a long long wait for this next installment. this 'ramping' up of expectation can be difficult to fulfill & at first it may seem a bit of a disapointment but this is simply due to the fact that you are now familiar & comfortable with the characters and the opening 2 or 3 episodes are a little slower than usual. this soon gives way to some terrific story lines & the tension builds as the series plays out. all involved are on top form & even this many years on this is edgy, provocotive & controvertial,( one characters racist tendencies come to the fore, tagedy takes place & the darker side of a few begin to be seen),.
the extras are good if not great but who cares? if your a fan then this is essential stuff after such a frustrating wait. if your new to nypd blue then starting with series 3 isn't a disaster but starting with series' 1 & 2 would give you a greater appreciation of what happens, all the characters have a long arc that slowly builds & makes for a depth that few series before or since can match.
this is fully recommended, just be prepared for sleepless nights spent watching " just one more episode."NYPD Series 3 - At lastReview date: 2006-03-24 Rating: 10 out of 10I didn't think they would ever release another - we have been waiting for this for FAR TO LONG(Like the Shield Series 3 Region 2).We have had to wait two/three years for the third series on DVD - it's like a torture - tempting with a taste but not allowing a bite. NYPD Blue is one of the best COP shows ever(with the Shield) Sipowicz (Dennis Franz)- top cop - pity there are not a few more like him in real life, the rest of them are good too, story-lines are great - totally believable... this almost compete's with 24 for being the best!!
