Best series
Review date: 2007-08-25 Rating: 10 out of 10

I cheered when Roger came in in the first of these episodes. Id been wondering where he was all through the first 3 seasons. He just makes it funnier for me.
This series seems to have the best episodes i ever saw. Its the best of the best in my opinion.

Good but not THAT good
Review date: 2006-09-03 Rating: 6 out of 10

It seems as if the show took a turning during season four. Most of the situations are just too unrealistic and we no longer have a comedy about an average British family in the 00's but almost a remake of the absurdity that was "Terry & June" in the 80's.
There are still some good moments and some very funny lines but I can't help but think that the cast carry the show because the writing is not up the the standard of the earlier series'.
Also, the BBC seem to have made several edits to language throughout this set which begs the question, why give it a 12 rating if you are going to edit out minor bad language?

Growing Bigger, Getting Smaller
Review date: 2006-04-05 Rating: 8 out of 10

Six years ago in 2000, the BBC comissioned this fantastic little comedy show, starring the fading Ben Lyndsay and up and coming star, Chris Marshall. Then, despite the critical backlashing, rating figures soared. Lyndsay was revitalised, he went on to political satire in 'A very Social Secretary' and as the lead in ITV's 'Jericho'.
As each series develops, the characters grow older, grow dumber and find themselves in entirely ludicrous yet not entirely unbelievable situations. But once all well drawn out characters then start to fizzle out. What was once a fine British comedy, turned into Wisteria Lane: an American household in a UK neighbourhood.
Sadly, realism has been comprimised for half-baked satire and weak observations, perhaps justifying the scathing critics. The plot lines fizzle, and now in the new series, showing, we have Robert Lyndsay dressed up as a giant cockeral at a gentlemen's club. Reality has been repressed for the sheer lunacy of cheap laughs.
Luckily there are plenty of laughs to be had in series four, although i do warn, it does show weaker episodes and a definite turning point, to where this great comedy, should have learnt to call it a day.
