Lovely Film
Review date: 2008-03-31 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is a wonderful film. It has an irresistible plot of two attractive professors (he's got the looks, she's got the witty personality) trying to conduct a platonic marriage having found a genuine liking and affection for one another. Jeff Bridges is perfectly cast as the helplessly sexy, rumpled academic who after being unlucky in love seeks a passionless and thus more 'solid' marriage. Barbara Streisand is lovely as a brilliant, frumpy, hopeless romantic. Between his helpless sexiness and her hopeless romantic-ness you know you are set for an emotional equivalent of a 'rags-to-riches' rollercoaster, all delivered with plenty of laughs as well as insightful (even tearful) moments.
The supporting cast, notably George Segal and Lauren Becall is generous in making the leads look even better whilst providing great comedy and solid emotional backdrops to the story as well.
The climax provides an emotional crescendo (dramatically as well as musically!). If you like rom-coms with a bit of thought thrown in then treat yourself, buy this film.

Puff piece from hellReview date: 2008-01-02 Rating: 2 out of 10Don't get me wrong. I love Barbra Streisand, Jeff Bridges and George Segal. Love them. I was looking forward to this. But it's like a cliche of a puff piece- Barbra stars and directs and produces herself as a smart intellectual who everyone just loves, but is frumpy. So she gets a makeover, and is all the above but fantastically gorgeous, too. After that, Pierce Brosnan (who didn't fancy her as much before, but still did a bit, as this is Barbra's film, after all, and everyone finds her a bit sexy at least)and Jeff Bridges are fighting over her. Fighting! And she's not even sure if she wants either one......it's a class cast all the way, but just ridiculous. And it doesn't have the lightness of touch I was hoping for either- the film seems to take itself v. seriously and acts like a heavy drama- which is silly- as it exists purely to say- check out Barbra- she's still got it. Which I don't think most people would see as an important message. Great movie!!Review date: 2006-05-23 Rating: 10 out of 10It has you laughing and crying! It is funny throughout the movie, with some great one-liners! It's a bit girly, but us girls' need something sweet and romantic to cheer us up every no and then, and this is the movie for that!
Streisand directs, produces and stars in this lovly film. She also provides the theme song, dueted with Bryan Adams. This is a wonderful film that will leave you feeling happy and warm. The end reall complete's the film for me.
