I Wish I'd Kept My VHS Recordings
Review date: 2008-05-15 Rating: 4 out of 10

There is no doubt that LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE has suffered during its transfer to DVD. While the picture quality is acceptable in this UK box set release of Season Two, the sound is absolutely terrible being either muffled, or distorted, or a combination of both. Either way, it spoils my enjoyment of the episodes that looked and sounded much better when the show was originally transmitted in the 1970's. There is one bonus over the US DVD release, the opening titles, missing from each episode in that set, are restored.

The only thing that annoys me more is the large volume of reviewers here at Amazon who keep giving this product five stars and listing all the episodes. If you are about to write a review, please consider this: customers who want to buy are usually aware of what the apple tastes like, they just want to know if there are any grubs.

Superb series let down by average presentation
Review date: 2006-06-13 Rating: 6 out of 10

Series two contains some of the best episodes in the ten season run, however the presentation of the box set is a real let down.

With series one we got three normal sized double disc cases, inside a nice embossed slipcase. This time around, we get a non-embossed case with slimline cases. What is the point of changing the packaging so the two seasons together look out of place on the shelf? The slimline cases I recieved feature pathetic central hubs, so the discs rarely stay in place.

Presentation wise, the picture is an improvement over the region 1 releases, but the sound is far worse, meaning you have to crank it up to near maximum to enjoy it. Which is a shame, as the series features some wonderful music.

Quite why Universal can't go back to the original film and remaster these sets is beyond me - these types of releases are zero budget money makers for Universal. I suppose we should be grateful to getting the series at all though.

Lets hope if season three is released the sound is vastly improved and they don't go and change the packaging again!

Series 2 - Little House maintains it's high standards
Review date: 2006-04-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

I loved the first series of Little House On The Prairie so much it's often a fear as to whether a series so consistently good can continue to sustain such high standards. There's certainly no fear with this the second series.
If anything i believe this series may be even better. This is not necessarily due to the fact the storylines may be stronger but because the characters are now more clearly defined. There's a greater warmth between the characters and a great deal of fun also at times. There's more emphasis on the relationships between the schoolchildren and also between the Ingalls and the Olesons which although mainly consisting of squabbles also reveals some lighthearted, humourous moments - a fine example being the charming episode 'The Campout'.
There's also much more depth given to Mr Edwards character particuarly in possibly the series's most significant episode - the two part 'Remember Me' and also 'His Father's Son' - both penned by Michael Landon.
Stories such as 'Four Eyes' which concerns Mary's failing eyesight are also significant as it's subject's storyline would result in much more dramatic circumstances in future series's.
The only episode i have major reservations about is 'A Matter Of Faith' in which Caroline scratches her leg. It seems quite an odd storyline and for me isn't up to the series's usual standard. However many of the other stories are wonderful.
On a cautionary note as with series 1 the sound isn't as good as i'd have liked. It's slightly muffled throughout which with the aid of volume adjustment doesn't detract from the series's enjoyment too much. There are maybe a couple of stories however where the sound is particualy bad.
An extremely worthwhile purchase and value for money nevertheless.
