In many way Hope and Glory is a typical rescue the failing school drama. Lenny Henry takes the lead role as head teacher. Lenny is never going to win a BAFTA, but when he keeps a straight face he is convincing enough in the role.
The real star for me was Clive Russel who plays a paranoid deputy headmaster in the first two series. His portrayal of the tragi-comic character lights up the show.
The supporting cast, generally does a excellent job. The school has a genuine feel about it. The plotlines are simple and very real.
While there is plenty to raise a smile throughout this drama there is a lot of tradgedy as well.
I would recommend this to most people. Approach it as a drama as well as a comedy, then I think you will enjoy it.
