They don't make them like this anymore
Review date: 2008-01-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

bleak, poignant, gripping, ingenious, thought-provoking and uplifting, this is one of those films that will stay with you for a long time. It has an otherwordly, spare quality of the 1950s B-movie that lets your mind focus on the predicament of the main character - I doubt this could be remade with the same effect. This really is a must-see

A great lesson in relativity this movie - especially the scene involving the cat that makes one realise just how terrifying it must be for a mouse! (I've never been a cat lover for that reason!)

This film boasts some great special effects that I guess could not be bettered - even with today's technology and advancement if they were to do a re-make (assuming that is that there has not already been one?)

About the only flaw in this movie was the scene where Scot Carey struggles, even to move a piece of cake, yet manages to lift and move a giant pair of scissors with relative ease - and we all know which is the heavier! Unfortunately, it is today's modern critics of such classics that has encouraged us to spoil things by looking for such flaws.

Some great suspense and thrilling moments throughout, and a movie which does not lose its fascination and interest with either age or upon countless viewings. I was always puzzled as to why this title was so long in coming out on DVD.

SPIDER GETS THE POINT
Review date: 2007-06-26 Rating: 8 out of 10

I originally saw a shrunken version (pardon the pun!) on an 8mm cine film lasting some 17 minutes of this feature back in the 70s. It was great to view it again in its' entirety.

The actual feature only lasts just over an hour and a quarter, which I think is enough for this film. The effects are well done for the time and quite well acted for a sci-fi movie.

The only thing I question is.... would it be normal to find a TARANTULA living on a web in your basement? A large black house spider would have been creepier (in my opinion).

Another welcome addition to my growing collection of "B" movies. At least, even though they are "corny" these days, you find yourself going back to them...another attraction of the running times not being overlong.

Still got the 'wow' factor!
Review date: 2007-06-21 Rating: 10 out of 10

Despite being made 50 years ago, this truly great film still has the 'wow' factor for a modern audience.
The special effects are still highly effective; the battle of wills and clash with the spider is particularly exciting edge-of-your-seat stuff.
What sets this film apart as one of the great 50s sci-fi films is the fine acting. We run the gamut of emotions with a great performance from Grant Williams as the ever-decreasing Scott Carey. We share his journey from bewilderment at his predicament, through fear, anger, frustration, hopelessness and every emotion in between. The ending brings acceptance and peace for the plucky protagonist and satisfaction for the viewer. This great film still has the ability to thrill!
