A gentle, enjoyable crossing of medical drama and police drama.
Review date: 2006-08-31 Rating: 8 out of 10
This contains all six episodes of series one of DANGERFIELD. Dr Paul Dangerfield (Nigel Le Vaillant, CASUALTY) is supposed to be a doctor in a medical practice in Warwickshire, but, much to the annoyance of colleague Dr Joanna Stevens (Amanda Redman, NEW TRICKS) and the rest of the staff there, he keeps being tied up with his other duties as a police surgeon, thus leaving the practice almost endlessly short-staffed.
As if holding two jobs like this wasn't enough, Paul is also having to bring up two teenage children -- Al (Lisa Faulkner) and Marty (Sean Maguire) -- without their mother after an accident claimed her life. However, he has a place in his heart for courtroom attorney Kate Durrani (Kim Vithana), with whom he has a relationship that seems to be going well -- as long as she doesn't accept a placement in Bristol...
I enjoyed this series when it was first shown on TV in late 1995, and it's still enjoyable to watch and still surprisingly fresh (although the mobile phones from that era look a little embarrassing compared to today's offerings!). Great performances all around, really, and the blending of medical drama and police drama works well and even manages to slot in some light-hearted humorous moments without detracting from the story. In fact, this actually adds to the charm.
No extras on the DVD, but not really a major fault when you get quality shows like this.

Gentle entertainmentReview date: 2006-08-16 Rating: 8 out of 10I loved this series when it was on TV and am delighted to see it released on DVD. Nigel Le Vaillant plays the part of Paul Dangerfield - a GP in a fictional Warwickshire practice who also has the role of police surgeon. He's a widower with 2 teenaged kids (Sean Maguire and Lisa Faulkner). He often struggles with role conflict because his duties as police surgeon often clash with his day to day life as a GP - much to the consternation of one of the partners played by Amanda Redman. Nadim Sawalha plays another partner.
The cast is strong and all the actors interact well - Lisa Faulkner particularly is very believable as Dangerfield's daughter. The other treat for me is to see George Irving in another role - he plays DI Ken Jackson - but he may be better known to the audience as consultant Anton Meyer from Holby City. A totally different character - really great to see his versatility.
The plots aren't too complex but are engaging enough for a bit of gentle entertainment - not as gritty as "Frost". It combines medical drama nicely with the police "whodunnit" genre. Throw in the family dynamics of the Dangerfields and there's quite a bit going on. The only real disappointment as far as I'm concerned is the absence of any special features - I do like my commentaries and interviews on DVDs!! There are 2 discs and 6 episodes in total.Soft SpotReview date: 2006-05-10 Rating: 8 out of 10Yeah, I have a soft spot for this series, but only really because it was filmed where I live, Warwick. It's great to look at all the local landmarks, etc. It is certainly a "gentle" drama series and well worth a watch at this price.ExcellentReview date: 2006-04-04 Rating: 10 out of 10I was a fan of this show when it was on television and now i am really gald that i can watch the first series of Dangerfield all over again. Of course we havent heard of Nigel Le Valliant now ( What is he up to???????) and Amanda Redman, Sean Maguire and Lisa Faulkner have gone on to bigger and better things, at least i can watch this when they were real young, A GEM and it should be on television again
