I expect diehard Midler fans will enjoy this remake of the 1962 version,however try as she might she can't make this work, in fact she goes way over the top on occasions, instead of Momma Rose we get Bath House Bette. Gypsy should never have been put into the hands of Disney, It's sanitised, lacks pace and just doesnt have the raucous energy required for the world of vaudeville and burlesque. Cynthia Gibb is hopelessly miscast as Gypsy Rose Lee , Dainty June and her Farmboys are far to old, Tulsa will never see forty again and the three strippers Tessie, Mazeppa and Electra considering that they are supposed to be third rate and past their sell by dates are dressed in the most elaborated and highly expensive Bob Mackie creations. It's wrong this movie, all wrong watch the Russell/Wood version instead. It's far superior in every way.
