No this isn't the familiar 70s/80s version starring Michael Landon and co. it's a new version which claims to be a more authentic account following the Little House books more closely than before.
I have both versions of this story as it was used as the basis for the pilot of the tv series in the 70s. There are interesting differences which for me tells as much about the shift generally in movie making as the actual authenticity of the storyline itself. It's true to say this latest account is much more detailed and a lot longer in length. It's also true to say it's a lot more action packed with a more rugged feel which does tend to re-inforce the fact that these were indeed very hard times where there were never any guarantees from one day to the next. However despite these features this new version really doesn't come close to the old in terms of quality and enjoyment. It's much more action based (as opposed to character based in the old series)in style and while it's easy to admire the various quick fire trendy camera angles in the action sequences it's very hard to feel any real genuine bond to any of the characters. This results in a story that can be watched and enjoyed without ever really feeling connected to in any way. It really makes you realise how effective the warm chemistry in the original series was.
It can be argued the original series was a little too soft and sentimental to be authentic but it did tend to push all the right buttons with its many fans making for compelling viewing. This new version rarely really hits the emotional zone and despite its many fine attributes is in danger of passing right over the viewer's head.
The story's DVD is certainly a worthwhile purchase - it's just unfortunate it tends to re-inforce how great the orignal cast were.
