PRIEST AT THEIR BEST
Review date: 2008-07-03 Rating: 10 out of 10

VHS recording,on DVD, of a live concert in Memphis. This is Judas Priest at their best. I had forgotten how good these five guys were, with Rob at the front, the two pronged guitar attack, bass player and drummer just doing their thing in the background.
No extras included, but who cares.
Absolutely a must for any Heavy Metal fan.
Metal Gods still Living after Midnight.

BRIT METAL GODS !!!!

Superbly shot with multicamera angles for vhs release in 1982, this is Judas Priest at their absolute peak presenting their most recent record at the time, Screaming For Vengeance. This dvd used to come in an expensive box set as a bonus. It was time it was released separately, for those who, like me, are not hardcor JPriest fans willing to part with a lot of cash for a box-set. The picture is so perfect this has to be mastered from the master tape, not an old 1/2 inch vhs tape as is most usual in these cases. Typical ¨cheesy¨ (but lovely) video effects are discretely intercalated here and there, though not in a profuse manner so anybody complaining about this deserves a kick in the butt !! You'll read reviews stating one guitar can't be heard but truth is this is right only during certain songs. You get alarmingly louder volume level on the right channel during the opener/medley but then it evens out. Guitars ( as on JP's records ) are isolated on each audio channel so you'll get hell from either channel ocassionally, especialy during the beginning of each song, on which pedal volumes are used, then guitars fall down in the mix in an excessive way. Vox is the loudest sound all the time and that's another thing that really bothers me. I've read reviews stating Halford's voice was shot/hoarse from touring on this dvd and he couldn't reach highs properly. Those reviewers please get a new set of ears ! His vocals are so spot on and his highs so natural one tends to thing they're overdubbed (which they're obviously not ) The drums are a little rolled off but they'll shake your foundations at the slightest cranking of the bass control on your amp. The 5.1 mix is nothing short of fabulous and the concert clocks in at a healthy 93 ', no extras but hey, who's complaining ?

The Priest Live in Memphis 1982

Previously available as a VHS video and in the Metalogy Box set, this concert is now available on DVD. Recorded on the first leg of the Screaming for Vengeance tour in December 1982, it features a couple of songs from that album as well as most people's favorites such a Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law and Hell bent for Leather. And at about ninety minutes appears to be a full set.

There isn't much left to say about Metal Gods Judas Priest and Rob Halford. Notable here is the sheer number of Marshall stacks on the stage - the full width of the stage and on both levels - Spinal Tap, eat your heart out! Priest would be diminished (and were for several years) without Rob Halford's egregious campery, bullwhip in hand. One moment of great amusement for me - having made an effort to sound mid-Atlantic between songs, Rob suddenly slips into his best brummie accent; lest we forget their humble origins.

The American audience is shown from time to time, all dressed quite soberly and looking quite out of place - a contrast to a British Priest crowd in 1982, which was usually a veritable sea of denim, leather and pachouli oil.

The sound and picture quality is excellent throughout, but there are a couple of conspicuous overdubs particularly towards the end of the show, which doesn't really matter that much. With the original Priest lineup touring once again it is great to see what they looked like nearly 25 years ago and it is a genre that doesn't date badly. Well worth getting.

Great That They've Released This on DVD...
Review date: 2006-04-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

This was recorded in Memphis in 1982. The tracklisting is superb and in my opinion this DVD is worth every penny for Another Thing Comin, Devils Child and Screaming for Vengeance alone - superb versions of these songs are contained on this DVD. Of course, you get a whole lot more including The Ripper, Electric Eye, Metal Gods, Living After Midnight, the Sinner etc.

With respect to the previous reviewer, brief research prior to purchase would have revealed that this was a re-issue, therefore I think it is a very unfair rating of 2 stars that has been given. This is a superb DVD, Judas Priest at their best and well worth 5 stars.
