"Superman Seems to Have Stuck"
Review date: 2008-07-06 Rating: 8 out of 10
In this modern (read early 90's) take on the classic American Superhero, things are pretty much as we'd expect. Clark Kent (Dean Cain) has moved to Metropolis and gotten a job at the Daily Planet. He is teamed with investigative reporter Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher) as they investigate stories for the newspaper under the demanding eye of editor Perry White (Lane Smith). Rounding out the newspaper staff is eager young reporter/photographer Jimmy Olsen (Michael Landes) and society (gossip) columnist Cat Grant (Tracy Scoggin).
But Clark Kent has a secret. He's not a normal human but a man with extraordinary superpowers. In order to keep that a secret, he takes on the identity of Superman, a fact that comes in handy since many of the stories he a Lois investigate seem to include lots of danger. There's the sabotage of a space station. A gang of thieves use invisibility suits to pull off their crimes. A freak heat wave sends Superman behind bars when he is blamed. An asteroid hurtling toward earth gives Superman (and Clark) amnesia. A rival newspaper keeps scooping The Planet. And the staff of The Planet becomes hostages in their own office.
Behind many of the problems is one man, Lex Luther (John Shea). And while Lois has a crush on Superman (ignoring Clark in the bargain), Lex is pursuing her. Will she discover how evil he is in time or will she fall in love with the villain?
I'm not too familiar with any of the incarnations of Superman, but that hardly matters here. It builds its own mythology, while keeping many of the things familiar to fans of the comics. And the emphasis here is on the romance. In fact, it would be fair to say this is Superman as romantic comedy. There are several pretty funny episodes in this set, but they are balanced by some of the more serious, episodes that managed to pull at my heart strings.
And yes, there is plenty of action. Some of the special effects do seem dated today, but they hold up for the most part.
Everything is tied together well by the acting, including K Callan and Eddie Jones as Martha and Jonathan Kent. And you can feel the chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.
My only complaint with the season is the under use of Lex. He is often shown and used. But, unlike today's shows, nothing truly builds until the last couple of episodes. Instead it feels like every episode they forget what came before so they don't build anything.
Still, that frustration is minor. On the whole, this is a fun show. It probably doesn't have the mythology completely right. But it entertains in spades.

Best Superman portrayal in my opinion!Review date: 2008-05-25 Rating: 10 out of 10Okay! Before you think, "yeah right, a '90s Superman TV show, the best? I don't think so!" Give it a chance, because it really is.
First of all, I love pretty much everything to do with Superman, the original movies, the new movie Superman Returns (although there are some things about the characters/story I didn't like - mainly Lois Lane, but I'm not gonna get into it, I still mostly enjoyed it) and Smallville.
The reason I love Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman most is because first of all, the cast. The main cast is pretty much perfect. Clark, Lois, Lex, Perry, Jimmy, Martha, Jonathan, Tempus, H.G. Wells and Nigel in my opinion all have the perfect actors for the role playing them. They do change Jimmy from Michael Landes to Justin Whalin, both play the role really well but personally I prefer Landes (first season).
For me Dean Cain is Clark Kent and Teri Hatcher is Lois Lane. They both do extremely good jobs at capturing their characters and their romance is epic!
Another thing that is great about the show is the fact that we are shown the story from Clark's point of view in the way that he is Clark and becomes Superman to save people rather than Superman becoming Clark just to fit in. Because he would have been raised as Clark not Superman.
The morals are great in the show and I would suggest that if you want to appreciate the whole story that you watch all four seasons because it definitely makes the show a better experience watching it all the way thru and you can understand Lois and Clark's relationship better.
Please also bare in mind that this was made in the '90s so if you're expecting fantastic effects you better look somewhere else. But what this show offers is much better than special effects, it offers depth, great stories and believable characters. It's funny, dramatic, romantic, it has action, adventure and suspense.
I think Smallville is really great (I've only seen the first two seasons so far) but this is better! And it doesn't have a cry baby Lana who is only likeable in a few episodes.5 out of 5 for a great showReview date: 2008-03-10 Rating: 10 out of 10I remember watching this in the early nighties & i was upset when it finished so i had to get it being into this stuff its good to get back to the roots in the days before smallville graced our screens there was Lois & Clark when originally aired in the uk the show was just plain the new adventures of superman but as you can see we get the american title these days & even current repeats have it which is how it is supposed to be as the show is as much about Lois as it is about Clark we get some great storys from Clarks arrival in metropolis to Lex Luthors attempt to take over the daily planet.
All in all a great series and i will be getting them all AwesomeReview date: 2007-01-18 Rating: 10 out of 10The New Adverntures of Superman series is absolutely fantastic! It was on T.V. when I was little, and I have recently bought the box set. Every home should have one, dont stop untill you own it!!Just as good, only better...Review date: 2006-11-11 Rating: 8 out of 10I first started watching this programme from the beginning of series 3 when it aired on BBC 1 about 10 years ago. I then backtracked to watch the first 2 series which made a lot more sense. I was hooked from the first episode and how the characters were so well cast and you can really see the chemistry. This series really lets you understand the background behind superman and combines everything to get you gripped such as comedy, action, romance and sometimes sadness. I loved it when i was a teen and was thrilled to see the dvds released over 10 years later so now that i can really appreciate just how hot Dean Cain is!
