Back in the Dwarf
Review date: 2007-08-10 Rating: 8 out of 10
Show: Series 8 sees the cast get back to the Dwarf. Rimmer (Barrie) re-joins the cast with the members from the original episode (The End) returning too.
This has a big affect on the show which is changed drastically in its form. More cast, more shows, more 2/3 parters. It is very different, in some ways succesful, some not-so.
The best scenes are those in the 'cell' which mirror the 'bunk' scenes in series 1/2.
Sadly the series finale is weak and I'd like to see at least one more series in the classic style of 1-6 to send the show off with a bang.
Extras: As always the extras are supurb. Everyone is back for the commentary, though it all sounds a bit crowded with so many involved. The main documentary is up to the standard of the other series. If you're considering buying 'just the shows' DVD then consider this, for the extra money you will almost triple your viewing.
The Toy is not worth any extra money, go for the DVD only if there is a price difference.

The Dirty Dozen In SpaceReview date: 2006-06-25 Rating: 8 out of 10When Series VIII concluded its broadcast in 1999, many people were left bewildered as to where the show was going to next. Nearly eight years later, and the much talked about Red Dwarf Movie, has still not seen the light of day.
When I looked back at the episodes here, this series feels like a departure from the original concept of the show. The comedy has not suffered as some of the funniest lines can be found here, and Chris Barrie's return to the show was the icing on the cake. Filmed once again in front of a studio audience, the laughter finally feels more genuine than those of Series VII and the cast clearly relish in this, as shown on the Smeg Ups.
The extended episodes of Back in the Red and Pete give the original broadcast two and three parters a good makeover. The commentary from the cast this time doesn't feel as funny, certainly nothing can beat their commentary on Series VI. The Comedy Connections feature is five star documentary in itself, with interviews with cast and crew on life before and after Red Dwarf.
'The Tank' documentary like all the other documentaries in the past gives good insight on the series, cast opinions and production issues. The deleted scenes are particularly good in my opinion, especially hearing a reference to the Isle of Man, although it ain't a flattering reference I must say, but hey its all good fun lol.
The fact this series was a stand out for many reasons, the release of this dvd has managed to make it still feel that way, even in the design of the menus. Also with a little toy skutter more could be asked for? Yes, a Red Dwarf movie would be good, but we need to keep faith :-)
Well the journey has concluded for the eight series of Red Dwarf, and only time will tell where the franchise goes to next. Unbe-smegging-lievable.WOW!!!!Review date: 2006-04-26 Rating: 10 out of 10I loved it, espetially the little skutter, (great little guy) no seriosly this dvd is great the tank documentry is great fun and i think it is the best possible end to a show that rocks out loud anyway.... great show, great series, great dvd.....just great. :-)Back in the Red...Review date: 2006-04-14 Rating: 8 out of 10Anyway. Red Dwarf 8... Not the best series by a long shot but still very enjoyable. The DVD seems to fix alot of the problems with the original broadcasts. For example, Back In The Red parts I-III can be viewed as one long episode. This cut makes alot more sense and helps the continuity run though alot better. The same also applies for Pete Parts I and II.
Upon re-watching the whole series back to back (i have nothing better to do,ok!) you do start to see alot of the jokes you missed first time round and realise that the scripting is actually very clever.
Although the series is only a three star (compared to series 4/5/6) the dvd bonus features bring it up to a 4 star.
The Tank original documentary is another spot on 90 minute run through of the episodes behind the scenes and the like, talking to all the major players involved and one or two minor ones.
The Comedy Connections program (a brilliant program on BBC1) has some brilliant (and cringeworthy) early footage of chris barry and danny john jules in his maid marion and her merry men days...
Other than these there is the usual fare such as smeg ups, deleted scenes, story boards etc.
What does let these other wise fantastic extras down are the menu's. Set in the bunk in the tank, they're slow to respond and actually finding what your looking for is a nightmare sometimes.
All in All, the series is good but not great though the extras make it a Four star package.
And the scutter is pretty cool tooBrilliant but spoiled by the commentaryReview date: 2006-03-26 Rating: 8 out of 10Red Dwarf VIII is wonderful, brilliant and so funny. I would give the DVD 5 stars but take away one because the commentary is so disappointing. The actors have used the commentary time to chat idly between themselves and have given us very little information about how the series was done, very few anecdotes and very little information. They did the commentary on the previous DVDs in a similar vein. What a waste of an opportunity. I'm sure viewers would love to hear more about the series and less about what cars the actors drive or their thoughts on their hairstyles and clothing !
