Amazon.co.uk Review

Going Off Big Time is a British gangster thriller laced with post-Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels humour, yet free of that film's flash visual gimmickry and populated with convincingly real characters. Opening with a scene of violence and mayhem in a pub, the film unfolds in flashback as Mark Clayton (Neil Fitzmaurice, who also wrote the economical screenplay), recounts to his lawyer how bad luck and worse judgement turned this ordinary young man first into a hardened con, then into a small-time gangster. The prison sequences feature a masterly performance by Bernard Hill as the older con who shows Mark the ropes; the second half charts Clayton's rise to power taking over nightclub doors, running protection scams and, comically, dealing drugs from an ice-cream van. The style is plain vanilla with the rundown Liverpool settings giving a stark northern atmosphere somewhere between Get Carter (1971) and The Fully Monty (1997). It's small scale, unambitious stuff, and though Fitzmaurice packs plenty of plot into 83 minutes, more of Mark's romance with Natasha (Gabbi Barr) and his attempt to go straight would have lent the ending greater impact. The strong performances by a cast of almost entirely unknown actors are the best thing about the film.

On the DVD: The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image is sharp and detailed, though rather grainy in night-time scenes. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack doesn't get a lot to do but presents sounds with natural clarity. The extras comprise the trailer, two minutes of sounds bites and a minute of "B-roll", none of which add anything to the experience. --Gary S. Dalkin

Don't miss this film !

SUPERB!!

One of the best British films of all time, better than Lock Stock or Snatch and on a par with Twin Town.

Neil Fitzmaurice not only plays the lead role but wrote the excellent script. All other parts are played by actors who could not be bettered in the roles.

If like me your only prior knowledge of Neil Fitzmaurice was as Rayvon the DJ in Phonix Nights (which he also co-wrote) you'll be astounded by his acting in a straight role although not surprised by his writing talent.

By making this film I'm sure Neil "lived the dream" as Jerry would put it and I have no doubt that rather than garlic bread it should be "Neil Fitzmaurice - he's the future !!!"

NOT AS CLEVER AS SNATCH!
Review date: 2003-11-20 Rating: 8 out of 10

This is a highly overlooked british movie that I feel is in the same league as the likes of Lock Stock and Snatch. Okay I'll be the first to admit it doesn't have the same level of wit as the previous two movies nor does it have the depth of story and twist and turns BUT Going Off Big Time is a very enjoyable movie which incorporates gang culture, comedy and suspense. Set in Liverpool this film is a must for any scousers who like this genre of movie.
Peter Kay fans are in for a treat too as Peter himself has a small roll in the film and the main roll is played by non other than Ray Von (Neil Fitzmaurice)who plays a very convincing roll indeed.

A really good well directed film. Big scenes of Liverpool and the gangster touch goes down really well. This is a must see if you like gangster type films.

Comparisons with Tarantino are not unjustified!

Right from the start this lo-budget self-styled gangster mob movie is fast moving and hits you hard. It seems more realistic than the likes of Lock Stock and Snatch due to the fact that you see how the main character actually becomes a 'Gangster'. Its really all accidental but in the end he becomes one of the most powerful men in Liverpool. The way he becomes this gun-toting hard man of liverpool makes you realise that this could happen to anyone put in the same situation in the first instance. It also makes you think about fate and the way in which you handle certain situations can make a huge difference to your future. As well as being very funny at times 'Going Off Big Time' is an under-estimated, under-rateed, quality Brtish film that needs more reviews and more media attention when they talk about great British Movies.
