Amazon.co.uk Review
A real highlight of BBC2’s output in the 1990s, This Life works on a simple premise of following the lives of five young lawyers who each share the same London home. Yet that simplicity shields what was, and remains, a groundbreaking series, one that never shirked away from any of the issues it chose to touch on. Across the two series that make up this unmissable boxset, we get to meet the full-of-himself Miles, the loud but troubled Anna, Milly the control-freak and the unsure Egg. Add in the upbeat Warren, whose gay but doesn’t want his parents to know, and the confused and bisexual Ferdy, and you have a melting pot of emotions and stories that are as captivating to watch as they were when the show was first broadcast.
At the core of This Life’s success though are some wonderful, career-making performances. The likes of Andrew Lincoln (Teachers, Love Actually) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Talented Mr Ripley) have certainly used it as a springboard to launch their careers, and we can only hope to see more of the excellent Daniela Nardini and Amita Dhiri in the future.
But for now, savour just what this is. It’s astonishingly confident, moving, at times flat out hilarious but always unmissable. And it’s taken far too long to bring it all to DVD. Make the most of it now it’s here.--Simon Brew END

Fantastic series - but if you rent this you only get 4 discs - missing a whole 13 episodes from series 2!!!
Not sure if the same applies if you buy the set - but worth checking before you buy!

Outstanding!Review date: 2007-11-15 Rating: 10 out of 10I've just re-watched this life for the 3rd time, and it's still as amazing as ever. Watched it all within a week! you just can't stop watching it! the characters are fantastic, and they all change so much that you become quite attatched to them. As warren so wonderfully put it, "Outstanding!"Absolutely brilliant & totally grippingReview date: 2007-01-15 Rating: 10 out of 10Whether you watch this series for the comedy, the drama, the people-watching or just the nostalgia of the nineties (when you were hopefully, like me, far too busy having fun to bother with the TV), you cannot fail to get something good from This Life.
Fascinating & enticing, it's a brilliant snapshot of the time, but rarely looks dated - it has an almost Shakespearean quality in its portayal of the basic human needs (love, friendship, sex, power, money etc). Every character has an aspect of themselves which you'll recognise - whether you love it or despise it - and you end up loving all of them for their imperfections - i.e you love them because they're just human.
Small caveat: This is a very British series and if you are not British or are not familiar with British culture then you might find it harder to relate to the characters and settings (As a Britisher I struggle to relate to "Friends" for exactly the same reason)
The life we wanted to leadReview date: 2006-12-01 Rating: 10 out of 10As a young trainee lawyer house-sharing in the late 90s, This Life was the life I and my friends all wanted to lead: to have a house as cool (and large) as the one shared by Miles, Anna, Egg, Milly and Warren/Ferdy; friends as acerbic and witty as Anna, confident as Miles, loyal as Egg; empathising with their career dilemmas and personal crises (although with less casual sex and drug-taking than in the show!). For a couple of years it felt like This Life almost made being a lawyer cool!
This is the show we were all glued to every week and if, ten years on, for many of us life feels like it's getting depressingly closer to that of cynical experienced lawyer O'Donnell than the optimistic, idealistic housemates we loved, this still reminds us what it felt like to be young and new in the 90s with all of life's uncertainties and possibilities ahead.SuperbReview date: 2006-11-25 Rating: 10 out of 10I recently bought this in a moment of nostalgia, and have watched the whole thing within just over a week. I was impressed by the quality of the acting, the camera work, and even the script did not feel dated despite it being hailed as one of the great British shows of the 1990s.
All in all, a superb buy - utterly gripped.
