Dad's Army at it's peak
Review date: 2008-06-19 Rating: 10 out of 10

The fifth series of Dad's Army is without doubt the finest of the 9 series. Just about every episode is a classic, and each one seems to get funnier as the series progresses. The characterizations are at their best here too, with Jones being more fuddled and getting into scrapes than ever, the relationship between Mainwaring and Wilson being as sharp-edged as ever, Fraser is a hoot, and all the characters just gel perfectly. The writing is sharp and witty with a good mix of witty dialogue, clever situations and slapstick humour, and there's some lovely location filming too. Hard to pick a best episode from this lot - probably The Desperate Drive of Corporal Jones, or maybe The King Was in his Counting House. If you only decide to buy one series of Dad's Army, then make it this one. Absolutley first-rate comedy from a golden era.

What can i say that no one else hasnt said?.
Dads Army is a comedy British institution as well as a classic.
My favorite character has to be frasier he has me in stiches when he calls mainwaring a fool one minute and then says he never doubted him for one minute LOL.
I wont go in to the subject of james beck and his tragic death in the 6th series i think that has been well and trully covered but nobodys collection of true British comedy would be complete with out dads army.
Admmitedly some of the episodes are a bit corney but i have to say that i still love them.
My American wife does not see what i see funny in them and if you were not brought up in the UK with our completely different humor then i dont sopose you can explain just why but i find it funny and thats all that matters and my 6 year old daughter also finds it funny so thats one convert.
Anyway this is my favorite series and i have to say that the show by now has really started to peak.
Top marks and 10 stars for my good friends at Amazon uk for shipping very quickly and never letting me down .
Thanks guys i just keep comming back cos you are that good.

We are the boys who will make you see again.

Jimmy Perry and David Croft were responsible for some of the best of all British TV comedy series. The passing of time seems to have elevated at least one of them - Dad's Army - to classic status.

Series 5 dates from 1972. I wouldn't argue with anyone claiming it is the best series of all. Plot lines and situations are not necessarily tied to attempts by a collection of home guards preparing to defend England from enemy attack. An especially funny episode - A Soldier's Farewell - shows Captain Mannering getting a rude awakening after dreaming that he is Napoleon. Another shows the platoon's attempt to safeguard all the money after Captain Mannering's bank receives a direct hit. The visual and the scripted comedy moments here are some of the best, but they are not directly tied to routine training exercises.

getting better all the time.

Ever since the BBC finally decided to release every series of Dad's Army in order, I have been amazed at how the show appears to come on leaps and bounds as the years go by. Series 5 continues that trend.

The acting and script are much improved from series 4; Corporal Jones' anecdotes are even more pointless and tiresome (exactly as intended), Private Godfrey's lines are somewhat less predictable (he isn't asking to "be excused" quite so often), and Private Pike is even more gormless than before. The tension between Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson has been raised a notch or three, and looks set to explode at any moment.

Once again the DVD production is let down by poor extras - a small window into the life of John Laurie (Fraser), who certainly sounds like a more interesting man than the time he's given suggests, and a photo gallery containing mostly stills from the episodes in black and white.

But that doesn't detract from the episodes themselves, and the DVD is still worth the money.

A classic running at full steam!

The fifth series is superb. That simple statement cannot be underplayed because the writing, the acting, the pathos (especially between Wilson and Maimwaring), and the comic pacing (i.e. unlike todays comedies they never feel the need to cram every moment with half arse jokes but they also deftly expore a full range of emotions).

My major criticism is of the BBC chiefly because they are so lazy in their presentation. The extra on John Lawrie is very intriguing but it is so short and one gets the impression that it has merely scratched the surface of this interesting man's life and part in Dad's Army. Apart from this small feature there is nothing for a sitcom that in it's heyday (and repeats) was watched regularly by about 20 million viewers. For instance, a commentary for the series would be fabulous I would love to know how Arthur Lowe reacted and performed the scenes with the wig in "Keep Young and Beautiful" but alas this was not to be.
