An ccurate description of the product
Review date: 2007-07-03 Rating: 10 out of 10
The huge box (for a dvd-box) contains the numbered ape head. It represents Caesar, the chimp who started the revolution and freed the apes.
Inside it, on the back side, you'll find a cubical space, covered with Caesar's shirt in wich is the much more smaller box, with the discs. In fact, putting aside the plastic "statue" with hair, this is the thing you wanted. Of course, it's nice to know that yopu have a unique item from a numbered and limited edition, a super box with special looks... but beside that, you bought it for the movies. All the DVDs have the label artwork on the same theme: a main character in black and white on a red-orange backround.
The foldout package is divided in two halves. The left one contains six discs and the right one the other eight. If you open it and measure the two sides, they are equal in height, because ones are thicker and the other's thinner... I'm sure you got it which is which. The left one can be opened to the left and the right one - to the right. The last plastic which holds the bottom discs on each side is fixed.
The left half contains:

Where each DVD can be found
In theory, each movie can be bought separately, each on a single DVD edition.
The 1st (from 1968) and the remake (from 2001) can also be found in a double DVD (2xDVD) edition; the second contains bonuses. All the five movies from the old series can be bought together in the box entitled "Planet of the apes - The Legacy collection" (6xDVD) which contains on five discs all the movies and on the sixth the bonus DVD from the first movie's double DVD edition.
"Planet of the apes" (1968 original movie / 1xDVD), not recomended because you can get the 2xDVD edition with 0,50 more; recomended if you're really not interested and wanted to buy the cheapest, the disc can be found in collections: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005NOLV
"Planet of the apes" (1968 original movie + the book / 1xDVD+1xbook), recomended only if you also want the book, the disc can be found in collections: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0009Y8UEU
"Planet of the apes" (1968 original movie / 2xDVD, with the bonus disc, the anniversary edition), not recomended because the price is too high and the other edition is identical and much more cheaper, the discs can be found in collections: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001E5T6A
"Planet of the apes" (1968 original movie / 2xDVD, with the bonus disc), highly recomended if you are interested only in the first movie because is the cheapest 2xDVD edition, for 0,50 more you get the second disc, the discs can be found in collections, so it's not recomended if you're interested in the whole collection:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000EF7XII
"Beneath the planet of the apes" (1970 / 1xDVD), recomended if you're not interested in the whole collection, because the disc can be found in collections: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0009YVCTA

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0009YVCWC
"The planet of the apes collection - special edition" (2001 / 6xDVD), recomended if you're interested in all the old movies, but wait until the "Legacy collection" is released on Amazon to compare prices; the discs can be found in the ultimate collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005NOMI
"Planet of the apes - The legacy collection" (6xDVD), recomended if you're interested in all the old movies, but wait until it's released on Amazon to compare prices with the "special edition collection", nice package although; the discs can be found in the ultimate collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000EBIOP8
"Planet of the apes - The television series" (4xDVD), recomended if you're (also) interested in the tv series; the discs can be found in the ultimate collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00009B0PS

"Planet of the apes" (the 2001 movie / 2xDVD), not recomended because it's the most expensive of its kind and also the first two disc edition, can be recomended if the other editions are unavailable; the discs can be found in the ultimate collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005RDQR

"Planet of the apes" (the 2001 movie / 2xDVD, definitive edition), strong recomended because it's the cheapest of its kind and also the last one released yet (July 2007), for 7,00 you get the bonus disc; the discs can be found in the ultimate collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000M2E5CK
"Planet of the apes" (the first and the last movie: the 1968 original one and the 2001 remake one / 2xDVD), recomended if you're and ocasional viewer and interested in the two most talked about apes movies, not recomended if you're really interested or want to collect because the discs can be found in their separate editions and this mix can be confusing if you have at least another movie; the discs can be found on individual basis or in collections: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000PMGRFA
"Planet of the apes - The ultimate DVD collection" (all the old movies, the 2001 movie, the television series, the animated series and the two bonus discs from the original movie and the 2001 remake movie), hugely and insistently recomended because it contains everything ever released on DVD and more (the yet unreleased animated series); there is no more you can go this numbered limited edition and exceptionally package contains every DVD: this one, no link necessary.
Brief
The television series can be bought separately, on a 4xDVD edition. It contains all the 14 episodes plus the cross promotional trailer (cand be found on 2-5 DVDs from the ultimate collection) and the trailer of the 2001 movie. The television series has only one season of 14 episodes. 20th Century Fox Television produced the series, which was overseen by Herbert Hirschman and Stan Hough. Originally, a full season of twenty-four episodes was planned but production was halted after only fourteen. "Planet of the Apes" fell victim to a problematic Friday timeslot and high production costs due to the intensive make-up procedures for the ape characters (three and a half hours in the make-up chair apiece). With the ratings low and costs high CBS saw no reason to keep pouring cash into the series and pulled the plug. The 14th episode was never aired. The animated series can be bought separately on a double DVD (2xDVD) edition, which is now (July 2007) available only in Region 1, NTSC. The animated series has only one season of 13 episodes.
The order of viewing
I recomend to view the 1st DVD, the 13th DVD (or can be skipped for now), the 2nd DVD, the 3rd DVD, the 4th DVD, the 5th DVD (the old movies so far), the 13th DVD (if you skipped it, now it's the last moment you can see it for a smooth viewing), the 7th DVD, the 8th DVD, the 9th DVD, the 10th DVD (the television series), the 11th DVD, the 12th DVD (the animated series), the 6th DVD, the 14th DVD. This is the way I view them and how I recomend it; you can do your own schedule.
To the contents - the remake may have had a mixed reception (and Mark Wahlburg) but its still has a trace of Tim Burton class (and Estella Warren). The old classic Planet of the Apes is the business, with Heston and Linda Harrison (later to become Wonder Woman) delivering fine performances. The sequels are good for a laugh - the thinking man's cheesefest.
Treat yourself, go on. There's something luxurious about conspicuous/ridiculous consumption like this.
