Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

Sixteen Candles is one of the movies of teen sensation Molly Ringwald's hay day.
The movie is set into motion when teenager Samantha (Ringwald) wakes up on her birthday to realise her whole family has miraculously forgotten about it because of her sister's wedding.
Samantha inevitably has a crush on the school hunk & there's the predictable other guy who wants her (Anthony Michael Hall).
Its a good film & even now tween movies are coying the key elements of the film. Unfortunately I watched Sixteen Candles a lot later so I've already seen all the unoriginal elemnts of the film, that probably twenty years ago appeared very smart.
Sixteen Candles is predicatable & girly, while I prefer more realism, I understand that in order to get what I want cinematically I have to watch independent films as opposed ot mainstream films.
In conclusion a nice, innocent film, entertaining & cute, its a no brainer, just pure nostalgic fun!

Sixteen Candles, Five Stars!
Review date: 2008-09-18 Rating: 10 out of 10

Although I was born at the very end of the 80s, I'm a big fan of many of the films that came from this decade, and Sixteen Candles has to be one of my all-time favorites.
There's something about the 1980s American films that is much more entertaining than the current films of this same genre, and Sixteen Candles is definitely a fine example of this.
Sixteen Candles has so much humour, but with the romantic twist that so many directors attempt to convey in their movies. It keeps you on your toes but will also have you laughing throughout the duration.

This is the film that you can see where his other films came from. Not your typcial 80's film and there are some scenes you wouldnt get away with now. Not bad for its genre

excellent film

This film is really good, the acting is brilliant. it has romance and humour. Its quite like the original chick flick without all the blandness and boredom todays films include. just a really good film, i'm not someone who was alive when this film came out, i'm currently a teenager but i think its better than most of the films these days.
