Amazon.co.uk Review

Serenity is a film that, by rights, shouldn’t have been made. For starters, it’s spun out of the short-lived and quickly-cancelled TV series Firefly, which has only itself got the full recognition it deserves on DVD. It then marries up two seemingly incompatible genres, the western and science fiction, has no major stars to speak of, and pretty much has ‘hard sell’ written all over it.

Perhaps that explains its modest box office performance back in 2005. What it fails to reflect, however, is that this is one of the most energetic, downright enjoyable sci-fi flicks in some time. Not for nothing did many rate it higher than the Star Wars movie that appeared in the same year.

It follows renegade captain Mal Reynolds and his quirkily assembled crew, as they work on the outskirts of space, trying to keep out of the way of the governing Alliance. That plan quickly changes when they take on a couple of passengers who have attracted the attention of said Alliance, and thus the scene is set for an action-packed, cleverly written movie that deserves many of the plaudits that have rightly been thrust in its direction.

What’s more, Serenity works whether you’ve seen the TV series that precedes it or not. Clearly fans of the Firefly show will be in their element, but even the casual viewer will find an immense amount to enjoy.

The only real problem is that given the film’s box office returns, further adventures of Reynolds and his crew look unlikely. Unless Serenity turns into a major hit on DVD, that is. It’s well worth playing your part in making that happen.--Simon Brew

I only found firefly the series after it had been already canned i fell in love with it from the first episode and was heartbroken when i looked to see when the next series would be out on tv and found out it had been canned.

Josh Wheldon is a genius with a penchant for kick-ass heroines and firefly/serenity does not disappoint(omg they canned The Dollhouse! when will they give him the run he deserves with a series)

This DVD is a perfect end for alll of us that were left hanging at the end of the first series, and its also great as a standalone for those of you that have never heard of firefly.

as someone who had seen this film before the firefly series i still found it to be a great, stand alone film. having now seen the complete firefly boxset and watched the film again i enjoyed it even more as i was now aware of the characters story before the film. a great movie worth 5 stars. hope they make more!

What can I say?
every detail is thought out, the dialogue is stunning, the plot is both gripping and believable(for sci fi), the action is pretty plentiful and well choreographed. The characters are so real it's impossible to believe that they arent.
One point to remember: this film will be far better if you see the firefly series- it's brilliant, even better than the film, it will familiarise you with the characters and it's full of joss whedons fantastic humour, characters and plot. the best series/film I've seen for years, maybe whedon's finest. Something for everyone.

If you want to see where it all began...

The bad news is that, as I write, Firefly the series isn't available on Blu-Ray in the UK. The good news is that it is available on US import, and it's coded for regions A and B, so buy with confidence. (Unless you happen to be in region C, wherever that is.)

Recommended unless you are a dull person. Ideally see the Firefly series first. Once you have seen both, if you have not already done so seek out Joss Whedon's other series.

The only disappointment with Serenity the film for me was Chiwetel Ejiofor as the opponent.

However, do note that presumably because this is for cinema the film has some somewhat stronger stuff in terms of violence and its aftermath than the series, although this is far from being a horror film or slasher movie.
