I bought this for my son as he liked Spy Kids and he was delighted with it. I also found it easy to watch (dozens of times so far). For adults it might be a bit cheesy but the actors ham it up quite well. It's vivid colours make it all very cartoony so it never really gets too frightening. I am sure there is some schmalzy hidden message/moral/whatever but even that gets hidden by the tongue-in-cheek approach. Might be better getting the 3D version as I have read it includes this 2D version.
