Amazon.co.uk Review

The beloved tale of Heidi, the Swiss miss whose indomitable spirit touches all those around her, despite having been dealt a harsh hand in life, gets a spunky boost in this 2005 film adaptation. A stellar cast includes Max von Sydow as Grandfather, a roiling-with-inner-rage Geraldine Chaplin as Rottenmeier, and a benevolent Diana Rigg as Grandmamma. At the centre of their world--like it or not--is Heidi, played with irrepressible optimism by the adorable Emma Bolger. As the orphaned Heidi is flung from home to home, city to city, valley to mountain, by those who profess not to want her, she accepts her fate and still manages to cast sunshine on her bleak situation. This version features breathtaking scenery--Grandfather's mountain aerie looks more like a Canadian Rockies summer spread than a place of self-imposed solitary confinement. At times the pan-European cast gives the film a feel of being the United Nations on location; Chaplin and Rigg's upper-crust British accents clash with von Sydow's clipped Swedish delivery, and Bolger's accent adorably reflects her Dublin roots. (Only the goats truly look Swiss.) But the story of Heidi has a huge heart, and this film is family entertainment in the best sense of the word. --A.T. Hurley

Top notch cast, glorious scenery and a faithfull adaptation of a much loved classic, this version of Heidi ticks all the boxes.

Orphaned Heidi (Emma Bolger)lives with her Aunt (Pauline McLynn - Father Ted) who dumps her into the care of her unwilling Grandpa (Max Von Sydow)at his remote home in the Alps. No sooner has this winsome child charmed her way into his heart than she is taken away and "sold" to be a companion to a disabled girl, Clara, who lives in the city. Soon Heidi is weaving her innocent magic on a cold, unfeeling household run by a Housekeeper (Geraldine Chaplin), but the call of the mountains and her Grandpa cannot be ignored and it takes the wisdom of Clara's Gran (Diana Rigg) to see where the child belongs.

Perfect performances from the adults and future stars to look out for in the children, this is a delightful classic that will appeal to the whole family. Highly recommended.

Truly heartwarming

After viewing this film with my family I said 'They don't make films like that anymore' and then I checked myself. This is a modern film but it is made by old school rules. The pacing is excellent. The actor's superb. The cinematography lovingly carried out. It will go down as a classic adaptation of the well loved story. Max von Sydow is perfect as the fractious grandfather with the heart of gold. The casting of the Irish Emma Bolger as Heidi inspired. Guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart and maybe just bring a tear to the eye. Leave cynicism at the door, curl up, dim the lights and enjoy!

Heidi

I have seen many versions of the Heidi story but this one stays closer to the book written by Johanna Spryi than the others have. Emma Bolger plays Heidi wonderfully the setting is amazing the story does differ evey so slightly from the book where Clara learns to walk.
Somethings from the book where left out of the film as there weren't needed for the story to work.
There are other parts where the story has been altered but it is the closet apdation I've ever seen.
If you are a fan on the book this DVD is for you even if your not a fan of the book this is a great family film.
