Robert Duvall's shining hour
Review date: 2008-10-26 Rating: 8 out of 10

A wonderful, uplifting performance by Robert Duvall in a film that he also produced and directed.

One does not need to be a Bible-thumping christian to feel the sheer emotion conveyed by Duvall's towering performance. An endearing quality shines through this movie as the central character - the apostle EF - grows on us despite his obvious imperfections. 'The Apostle' can be watched and enjoyed by people from all creeds and none.

one the most amazing performances ever
Review date: 2008-02-27 Rating: 10 out of 10

This film quite simple took my breath away, Robert Duvall proves yet again why he is one of the greatest actors of any generation.
Duvall's performance quite simply brought a tear to my eye, i make a point of collecting films that have any best actor or supporting actor oscar nomination or winner, So i have quite a impressive catalogue of performances to compare and this is without a doubt in my top 5 along with Robert De niro for Raging Bull, Anthony Hopkins for Remains of the Day, Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman, and Nick Nolte for Life lessons.
If your an acting buff like me, buy this movie!

Particularly uplifting if you're in any way bent towards the Divine. Otherwise, just enjoy charismatic Robert Duvall.

Complete and utter Tosh

Right down there with the worst of worst. Slow, I mean real southern slow. Long, long preaching tedium. It never gets started, Zero plot.

I was hoping for some insight on the incomprehensible phenonomonen that is christian America but you're better of buying a happy meal.

Never again Bob. If a movie has your name on it as writer/director/producer I will pass it by.

Excellent

Duvall had the idea for this movie for quite some time, but could not get funding for it. Eventually he decided to fund the project himself.

It is lucky he did, for his film is a gem. It gives a gritty and realistic view of the world of the Pentecostal preacher. Neither the "Elmer Gantry" style hypocrite of Hollywood nor the sinless synthetic saint of much Christian fiction, Duvall's character ("Sonny") is a saint who is also a human being. He sometimes drinks and womanizes, yet he also prays and regrets.

The basic plot involves Sonny, the Pastor of a Pentecostal Church, assaulting his wife's lover and leaving him in a coma. Sonny then goes on the run, reinventing himself as the Apostle EF and reinvigorating a small town church in the US deep south.

Some of the scenes are just fantastic. At one point a local white racist (played by Billy Bob Thornton) threatens to bulldoze the church, leading to a powerfully performed confrontation. Even the ending shows the Apostle's irrepressible spirit.

This is an excellent film, which gives a wonderful insight into the world of Pentecostal Christianity.
