Mother and baby - aww...
Review date: 2008-08-11 Rating: 10 out of 10
I first saw Gorgo in the early 90s and I fell in love with it. I have always been a Godzilla fan and I also love giant monster movies in general - dinos, ants, spiders, scorpions, etc...
The only thing that's ever annoyed me about the film is the use of American stock footage used to represent the Royal Navy - I mean F100s are intercut with Royal Navy Hunters to confuse the viewer, and the use of WW2 US Navy submarine footage.
Daft.
But the core of the film is still fab, and I love it to bits. Nice to see London gettng mashed for a change.
A nice touch is the CGI Gorgo used in the animated menu... how cool is that?

a 'GORGO-NTIAN ' feast.Review date: 2008-05-21 Rating: 8 out of 10I viewed this recently, and it has held up extremely well considering it's age. Essentially this is a 'SUIT-MATION' delight, and in the light of today's over-used, over-familiar sterile CGI monster effects, it is refreshing and reassuring to see good old-fashioned hand-crafted special effects.
The story darts along at a brisk pace, edited so that not a minute of boredom is evident on-screen: this is far better constructed story-wise than the majority of this type of film. Stock footage of warplanes and ships may not be brilliantly matched, but somehow seem to add to the vigour of the piece.
Uneven matte-work and bleed-lines pop up now and again, but this never marred the '33 'KING KONG' either, and indeed I can now spot 'sophisticated' greenscreen composite shots in many expensive effects films from today. This movie is much more entertaining and engaging than the 1976 'KONG', which wasted much of it's huge budget for various reasons too detailed to go into here.....'GORGO' delivers far greater spectacle and entertainment on a far lesser budget, which was put to infinitely better use.
I enjoy the similarly 'GODZILLA' films too, but in all honesty I prefer the relentless dynamics of this vital and impressive MONSTER-FEST.Britain's answer to Godzilla !Review date: 2006-02-18 Rating: 6 out of 10I first saw this as a student, when it was quite a cult movie. You get TWO monsters for the price of one, a British setting, London in the early sixties and no prizes for guessing what happens to Big Ben, when trouble breaks out. This is a fun movie, which had entire audiences cheering at the end and applauding the monster.
An added bonus is the chance to watch all the clips inserted into the film to make it more "realistic" - my favourite is the sight of American sailors trying to escape from what is supposed to be a sinking Royal Navy warship.
I recommend Gorgo to any fan of old monster films, who also has a sense of humour. There is a twist in the tale, making it a cut above the Godzilla-destroys-Tokyo films - enormous fun !Monster-tasticReview date: 2005-10-13 Rating: 10 out of 10If you remember all those sci-fi/monster movies from your childhood, you'll love this! The storyline is of course, complete tosh but that in now way detracts from an extremely enjoyable experience, and the sets and special effects are wonderful. The whole thing has a very real feel to it, particular highlights are the destruction of the fishing village and the eventual rescue at the end, but I won't spoil it by giving away too many details!
If you like your monsters big, scary and gunning for revenge, you'll just love this perfect monster-fest.
