Sue Pollard,why no oscars?
Review date: 2007-10-17 Rating: 8 out of 10
Most of the cast are quite funny, the real star is Ms Sue Pollard,WOW,why is she not in Hollywood yet?Her acting is incredible, outshines them all. Were are your Oscars Ms Pollard?
Set in an old train station - it takes you to a place in a timeless world of it's own and it engages you in it. The story lines in this series and series 1 are slapstick, predictable, innocent and charming. You can see alot of the gags coming but that makes them even more funny all the same - as you wonder how funny they can make them only to see them exceed your expetations. Sue Pollard is at her best in this comedy, she is histerically funny.
Perfect TV for a Sunday evening when it was originally on, makes you smile.
Sadly, Series 2 sees more of the bad bits of Series 1, and less of the warmth. It's hard to work out why this is... but the fixation on the relationship between May and Parkin is even stronger this time round - many interesting plots are thrown out the window for another ten minutes of these characters saying exacly the same as they always say. It gets so bad sometimes, that I was reaching for the Fast Forward button on the remote.
The series has changed though. throughout the series there are some real belly-laugh moments - something Series 1 never had for me at all. Moments that are quite surreal: Harry the Signalman dancing to singing in the rain, the outcome of a street party with bakes beans, Ethel falling off of broken stools in the buffet... very very funny.
For me though, these few moments cannot hid the fact that whilst series 1 was warm, atmospheric and panto-like, series 2 is very often plain dull. Some episodes don't appear to have a plot at all, and those that do don't draw to a conclusion they just... well... stop.
Recommened for die-hard fans and steam buffs only. Otherwise, opt for the first season in preference.
