Do I love it or hate it?
Review date: 2007-01-15 Rating: 4 out of 10
I have watched this film twice now, and am still unable to decide whether I love it or hate it. Do I give it one star or five? It is gory, the acting is questionable, it has obvious budget limitations, and I can't help thinking what is the point. Having said all that, there is something about this film which I am hooked on but cannot quite put my finger on what exactly. I enjoyed the limited dialogue and the frustrations suffered by all the characters was gripping.
Would I recommend it? Yes, I think so, as it is one of those films you will never forget you've seen! Contrary to the other reviewer, I would have appreciated subtitles for the French, but coped none the less.
Not for the faint hearted.

Slick, poetic, uncomfortableReview date: 2006-11-10 Rating: 8 out of 10I picked this up on the recommendation of a friend who had been to see Vincent Gallo in concert. I usually don't like him - his voice is bordering on the pathetic (in the sense that if he doesn't stop whining, I'd feel like taking him to the vets to be put to sleep!)and his acting consists of starring just past the camera with a difficult-to-fathom and slightly vacant gaze. However, I was blown away! Clare Denis' beautiful evocation of Paris reawoke memories of the city long dormant in my mind, and Gallo takes a back seat to the poetry of the camera and the interspersal of brutal imagery. There is a lot left to the imagination for the majority of the film, with sparse, minimal dialogue, mainly composed of banalities ("I'm happy. Are you happy?" "Yes, I'm happy.") and platitudes. No subtitles for the French dialogue (Hurray! Someone who is not patronizng the audience!) and no lengthy and dull explanations of what in the Lord's name is going on! In fact, I would hae prefered to have taken a stab at figuring out what was what without the slightly proscriptive (and sadly, these days, ubiquitous) sleeve notes.
It's gruesome, it's strangely erotic, and it's not got a very happy ending! God bless the French!
