Amazon.co.uk Review

Luc Besson wrote and directed the stylish thrillers La Femme Nikita and The Professional; though he didn't direct Unleashed, the script has his trademark fusion of outrageous sentimentality and over-the-top violence. Hong Kong action superstar Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero) stars as Danny, a man raised to be a brutal attack dog by a nasty gangster named Bart (Bob Hoskins, Mona Lisa)--when Bart removes Danny's collar, Danny pulverizes everyone in the room. But a chance encounter with a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby) reveals to Danny the possibility of a less brutal life, and when a retaliation attack gives him the chance to escape, he does--but Bart won't let him go that easily. The fighting in Unleashed is effectively jolting; Li and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) have purposefully stripped away the smoothness of most movie combat (especially with a genuine martial artist like Li) with raw, unnerving results, especially when juxtaposed with the sweet and earnest scenes of Li regaining his humanity with Freeman and his step-daughter (Kerry Condon). This freewheeling cocktail of bloody noses and ice-cream cones isn't for everyone, but fans of both Besson and Li will leave satisfied. --Bret Fetzer

Modern day Glasgow
Review date: 2007-05-08 Rating: 6 out of 10

Until watching this film, I didn't realise that everybody who now lives in Glasgow, and I mean everybody...teachers, shopkeepers, gangsters etc. speaks with a London accent. Not a Scottish accent in the whole film. That's globalisation for you.

Pleasantly surprised

Easily Jet Li's finest acting even though he doesn't speak! As unlikely as the storyline is I was drawn in because the fight scenes were very good and the distinguished supporting cast added that extra dimension. Must see for all Li and Hoskins fans.

BEST JET LI EVER!!!

That's a very good movie indeed!

It's a martial art oriented movie but there are no pointless fighting scenes such as flying people or Steven Segal's style like 30 minutes fight and no scratch...

It's brilliantly directed and mixes perfectly the action and the characterization of the actors, which are delivering some great performances. There's a quite touching plot and story and I loved the way it melts in the surroundings..

The soundtrack is superb and enrichs the atmoshpere and the suspance. top marks on my board!!

not for the mindless

everyone told me to avoid this film like it was the plague - yet last night i sat down to watch something that i thought was going to be horrible and was pleasantly surprised. this is one of the best "acted" performances of jet li's career without a doubt. if you really want to see li finally used in a way that flexes both his power to impress his physical presence upon us combined with a tender, understaed ablity to actually act - the go no further than here. it really is worth it.
if all you want is non-stop action then don't bother ... simple as!
this is kung fu for an audience that can think!
