CARRY ON CRIMBO
Review date: 2008-08-22 Rating: 10 out of 10

Great to once again own this,
But now i have it on DVD and all 4 christmas episodes.
I have the NTSC version from Amazon USA but it has extras such as carry on christmas memories and a night with peter rogers.

I never was keen on the Carry on TV series but the christmas specials were great and i got them out every christmas since 1988-1998 and watched them religiously every christmas till i moved to the USA.

Anyway most of the carry on gang are present all but kenneth williams who vowled he would never appear in any carry on TV series.
But the late great frankie howard more than made up for his absence.

If your a carry on fan but didnt like the tv series well as i said i didnt but loved the christmas specials.
You would be a fool not to have them in your collections.
Great classic seaside post card humour with some pantomime thrown in.
So CARRY ON CHRISTMAS.

Well done Peter Rogers !

This is the best example of Carry On TV ever . It is a pity that when Carry On Laughing was filmed in 1974-75 Kenneth Williams stuck to his no Carry On TV policy Charles Hawtrey had been axed , Terry Scott had moved on and Sid James was only availible for the fist few episodes . Carry Christmas works so well becuase the final three of those principles where present . Frankie Howerd was superb in the 1969 special & it is shame that for the camp parts in Carry On Laughing that he could not have guest starred . Hattie Jacques , Bernard Bresslaw , Joan Sims , Barbara Windsor , Kenneth Connor & Jack Douglas acted very well and thus made up for some of the weaker scripting in the 1970's ones when Talbot Rothwell was not up to doing the writing . Terry Scott is clearly in his element in TV farce as is Hattie Jacques . In the 1970's they could have ditched the cinema and just done Carry On TV shows had they been of the calibre of these festive specials . The ratings proved that people would watch Carry On on TV if the quality was good enough & if anyone can top Peter Butterworths drag acting then I will be suprised . An excellent way to get laughs over the festive period ! Just a pity that Carry On Laughing was so poor - had it been done to the standard of these Christmas shows then it would have been a ratings hit !

For some wonderful but as-yet-unexplained reason, this country has gone mad about collecting classic comedy DVDs from the 60s and 70s. Carry On was - and still is - and epiphany of success. Each of the films were made on the slighest budget yet made (and still make) immense amounts of money today. The Christmas Specials are exactly that; they are special because they mix up the tradition of Christmas with the tradition of the Carry On brand, and are just delightful to watch. The first Christmas Special (1969) is by far the best, with a brilliant show-stealing performance by Frankie Howerd and recognisably excellent contributions from the usual Carry On team. Having said that, the others are not as good but still retain the Carry On feel; whenever we watch a bad Carry On we forgive them because we love it and just can't help it. The package is also very good here; a standard 2-disc setup comes with a solid and glittery slipcase that makes for a wonderful gift to yourself or somebody else. Each 'special' is introduced by 'Mr Carry On' Peter Rogers and the interactive menus are wonderful fun... Overall then this is just perfect, theres no other way to describe it, BUT I would like to draw your attention to the fact that Sid James also made a TV christmas special (seperate from the Carry On team) that has not been seen since 1971 called "All THis and Christmas too", and it is fantastic!!! The only way to see it is to buy Bless This House: The Complete Series 4, available now at amazon. Make Christmas magical again this year with priceless comedy from a much loved and much missed era of television.

A great DVD

At long last, the Carry on christmas specials are on DVD and this set is worth buying for the Carry On fan and that's not just for the sake of completion.
The specials themselves are a mixed bag (the 1969 on is my favourite) but are much better than the mediocre Carry On Laughing TV series.
More of the cast are present here and there are great performances from Charles Hawtrey, Sid James and Frankie Howerd.

Best of all, this release has been blessed with the finest array of extras on a Carry On release. some worthwhile interviews and a 45 minute evening with Peter Rogers at Pinewood.

A must have release for the Carry On enthuisiast!

Well worth the wait!

Wow - what a fantastic package for us fans of the Carry On series. This is the long-awaited debut on DVD of the 4 Thames Christmas specials and they really were worth waiting for. I rushed out and brought my copy today on the recommendation of the www.carryonline website and it really was worth the cash! The quality of the programmes, considering the earliest was made in 1969 is very good, and they've actually spent some money on the DVD menus too - they are great! The extras include a 45minute feature 'An Evening with Peter Rogers' which I've not been able to sit and watch in its entirety, but the snippet I saw looks very interesting. There are also interviews with Peter Rogers, Jack Douglas and Wendy Richard which I have seen and are informative and different from anything I've seen before. For once, they've not just rounded up the usual suspects and they are talking specifically about the Christmas Specials which is nice. To top it off, there's trivia both on the DVD and also, as a printed booklet, which was a nice surprise as it didn't say that on the DVD itself! Rounded off with a sparkling slipcase, this is a great package. Glad I didn't have to wait til Christmas !!!
