A great show in the first season
Review date: 2008-08-24 Rating: 10 out of 10
This was one of the best science fiction series ever made!!! Here science fiction is at its best which means that is not just an action show of some heroic humans fighting hostile alliens (as is the case with many other sci-fi shows). This series follows in the wake of 2001: Space odyssey both in the visual effects and in the exploration of metaphysical questions about humanity! Here space exploration is really an exploration oh humanity as science fiction is meant to be. Unfortunatelly in season 2 the producers changed radically the show. Some of the actors left the series (including professor bergman) they changed the opening music, they rejected the deep meanings of the first season's episodes, the wrighting became bad with some romance added some cheap humor and a lot of simplistic plots (and ofcourse all the alliens became suddently hostile!). They almost ruined the series! I'm not interested in a dvd release of the second season but this one is really great! don't miss it!!

Superb quality, shame about the conceptReview date: 2007-09-22 Rating: 6 out of 10I was a huge fan of this series back in the 1970s when I was ten years old. It's great to return to those days and revisit this series. Even now, after Star Wars, new Star Trek series, and other sci-fi films and series, it is clear that Space 1999 was a lavishly produced production that should have received more praise and primetime coverage.
The remastering on these DVDs is excellent and all credit should go to the team that has produced them. The box comes with two booklets, and the final disc has a whole host of wonderful extras.
And yet, and yet. I cannot ignore the many scientific errors contained within the series. Indeed, the whole basis of the series is scientifically unsound. Huge astronomical distances are covered within a matter of years, aliens speak English - indeed, most of the moonbase personnel have English accents - and Eagle engines make noises in vacuums. These are just a few basic problems - there are countless more! It is difficult at times to keep a straight face at some of the antics, and the monster in Dragon's Domain just makes me laugh.
Having said that, the concepts behind some of the stories are quite clever and philosophical; much of the acting is very good (Martin Landau is extremely convincing); the effects are very professional for their day; and the soundtrack is arresting.
So, despite all my quibbles, I will return again and again to these DVDs on rainy days to revisit my youth and wonder anew at both the highs and the lows of this underrated show. The definitive release of SPACE: 1999 - Year 1Review date: 2006-03-27 Rating: 10 out of 10This is absolutely 1st class. The picture and sound quality will astonish you. The work that Network have done in terms of restoration and remastering is amazing.SPACE:1999 remains one of the most controversial science fiction/fantasy series ever created... & I love it :-)
I can only hope that Network decide to release Year 2 and take the same amount of care over the restoration process that they have with Year 1 (you never know, we might even get to own "Message From Moonbase Alpha" - the definitive ending to the Alphan's long journey - & very moving it is too).
Buy this set, the presentation is laveish and the series itself contains some of the most beautiful and thought provoking episodes of the series. Highlights include: "Breakaway" (surely the most involving, stunning TV Series pilot ever filmed?), "Another Time, Another Place", "The Guardian of Piri", "Collision Cource", "War Games" and the mind booglingly scary and atmospheric "Dragon's Domain".
Even today, this is ground-breaking television on every level as the writers and actors go against every expectation and break every rule to create a series that truly stands on it's own.
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!Review date: 2006-01-27 Rating: 10 out of 10Very rarely has a so called "double dip" by a studio been worth it. With this release, Network has done justice to a series that had all the qualities of a superior SF show done on a movie scale for TV.The picture is absolutely *superb*. The audio is *phenominal*, especially in the area of the sub woofer. Without a doubt, worth every penny I paid for this set...it is absolutely AMAZING!
*This* is the way old TV series need to be remastered...it is *THAT* good.
I have the A&E Remasters from the USA (which I think are the same as the Carlton ones) which were OK, but man...these new Network remasters take the cake. The colors are vibrant, no grain or dust, the audio is phenominal. This is positively the way the creators of the series meant it to be seen. Just watch it on a big TV and see what I mean.
If you have the old discs...DUMP THEM...NOW! Compared to the new remastered editions it's like comparing caviar to canned tuna.
It's *THAT* good!
Fly Me To The Moon !!!Review date: 2006-01-24 Rating: 10 out of 10I am revisting my childhood by watching this again. This is an absolute must have in any DVD collection. The attention to detail and quality of the DVD covers is stunning. Professor Bergman would be proud. It was so nice to see all my favourite characters, Martin Landu and Barbara Bain were superb and Barry Morse is someone I want to hug. Like meeting old friends again. I grew up on Space 1999 and have never forgotten it, but seeing this DVD boxset was like comming home!!
I particularly like the music, I think this was restored and the picture quality is excellent, really fined tuned with tender loving care. Can't wait for Year 2 to be given the VIP makeover!! So fly me to the moon and give me a comlock! I am ready to watch this DVD Boxset again and again!!
