Crude, But Funny...
Review date: 2007-06-11 Rating: 8 out of 10

This is a decently priced boxset for four series' of the BBC comedy, Two pints of Larger and a Packet of Crisps...

Admittingly, it's crude, lewd and peppered with swearing and lots of sexual references, so if you're easily offended than this is definitely not the comedy for you.

The series' follow the lives of five twentysomethings living their daily lives in Runcorn and contemplating the important things in life. It's a modern family of a kind, where family are your friends, and not necessarily your relatives that you go to for tea, ask advice on and spend cosy nights in or out with. Here's a quick guide...

Janet - Works in a cake shop (that looks suspiciously like Greggs) and lives with Johnny, her long term boyfriend. Janet is a hostess of dinner parties, loves a wild night out and absolutely can't stand Titanic. She loves Johnny, but is still hung up on her ex, and improvises an engagement ring with greasy tin foil.

Johnny - Unemployed (and wishes to stay that way) biscuit lover, whose knowlege of jammy dodgers is unrivalled and who regards burbon biscuits as decietful. He's liable to panic attacks at the mention of work and has an action man toy called Corinthian. He loves nothing better than spending time with Gaz, his mate down the local pub.

Gaz - Johnny's best mate, and a mechanic. A ladies man with bulging pecs, but unfortunately the IQ of a rivita. His collection of adult magazines would "keep the entire British Army from missing their girlfriends" he has a half brother called Munch who has an IQ even lower than Gaz's but has a way of fixing cars that surprises Gaz. Gaz is in love with Donna, but has a pathalogical fear of sheep..... and the C word....Commitment.

Donna - Gaz's girlfriend, and friends with Johnny, Janet and Louise. She aspires to go to College, and currently works for a bucket factory. She has a sex obsessed mum who loves to stand naked in front of windows, and uses her daughter's photos to advertise massage services in phone boxes. Donna loves Gaz, but is horrified of his porn collection, wary of Munch and can have a bit of a temper.

Louise - Has never put any weight on since she was fourteen. She is liable to squeaky screaming fits without warning, and has one prime interest... herself. She's friends with all those above. And she is the only one with a degree, don't you know? And though she'll never admit it, her fave book is Piggy Goes Oink...

Though it can be offensive, Pints merely pokes fun at society and the lifestyle of twentysomethings, and is closer to how some of us behave than we'd care to admit. Nights in with takeaway and boozy nights out is a staple diet of most twentysomethings (and younger's) social diets. Yet, Pints never takes itself all that seriously, and it's not as offensive as some comedies currently on TV. Watch out for Liz McDonald from Coronation Street, here playing Donna's lusty mum (no difference to Corrie then!) and looking extremely trim. It's an unflinching, sometimes vulgar comedy that through repeated viewings, grows on you.

So come on, let's go down the Archers for a couple of pints of larger, and a packet of crisps...!
