THE BEST BIG BAND MOVIE?
Review date: 2007-11-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

The 2nd Glenn Miller film and I think the better of the two. This film looks inside the tensions that arise in a band and the stresses that frenetic tours of one night stands places on the band & their families. The music is featured a lot more than in Sun Valley Serenade & not just Glenn, but Tex and Moe Purtill also get speaking parts. The shots of the band in the recording studio & then playing in various venues really capture the atmosphere of the time and , if for no other reason this film is a must just to see the Nicholas Brothers dance routine to "I got a gal in Kalamazoo"- they really do dance up a vertical pillar & do a back flip! (unlike Donald o'Connor in Singing in the Rain which used a visual & camera trick)
