I just can't decide what I think of this film - hence the 3 stars
Review date: 2008-10-22 Rating: 6 out of 10
5 stars in place, 2 stars in others (inappropriate use of music and the main character's family relationships are the weak points for me), this is however, an unforgetable and beautifully constructed film with some very good performances.
One other minor gripe - the wonderfully enigmatic and charismatic Olivia Magnani is terribly under-used and deserved more screen time.
Would I recommend it - yes, but with reservations.

A best friend rememberedReview date: 2008-09-14 Rating: 8 out of 10This is a thoughtful and evocative examination of loss, longing, and despair: loss of a life once lived; longing for an unattainable girl; and despair over an uncontrollable destiny. Chain smoking Titta endures his lonely existence in a quiet Swiss hotel with a stoic glumness until his long-suppressed desire for the hotel's bargirl is forced into the open. 'Perhaps sitting at this bar is the most dangerous thing I've ever done,' says Titta, prophetically. Then, in the third act, as Titta's actions bring everything to a head, he finally takes control - with dramatic results.
The movie's pacing is carefully, if a little self-consciously, managed and the direction and cinematography are always engrossing. It also boasts a marvellous soundtrack, segueing artfully from the Nymanesque to thumping electronica. Great stuff!
Definitely one to watch.Fast-paced arthouse diversion... *some spoilers*Review date: 2008-06-28 Rating: 8 out of 10This is a funny little film - both funny, ha!ha! and funny, curious. Many of the scenes are wittily directed and the script is also littered with witticisms which will make you chortle wryly rather than split your sides.
The curiosity lies in the fact that this is obviously an arty-farty type of film with really rather mainstream elements. So it's a thriller, of sorts, but there are plenty of stylistic flourishes and languorous images that are supposed to resonate portentously and thematically and the Swiss town in which it is mostly set is depicted as barren, soulless, bland and effortlessly stylish - much like the film's protagonist.
And while the love story at its centre reeks a little of middle-aged wish-fulfillment - I don't really see what the beautiful barmaid would see in Titta - it isn't as crass and Hollywoodized as it could have been. And I liked the director's restraint with this storyline. And I liked the idea that the power of even fledgling love can jolt even a weak man to acts of great selflessness and heroism.
So, in the end, this is a clever, modest, relatively simple - if not exactly simplistic - morality tale which contains numerous incidental pleasures and has a pretty snappy narrative; almost as if the director was trying to pre-empt any accusations of tedium. I think those reviewers who have been bored by Consequences of Love must have very low boredom thresholds indeed! This is a wholly engaging work which feels a bit too slight to achieve real greatness, but totally succeeds in its modest aims. And the central performance of Toni Servillo is subtle and perfectly pitched.
hmmm, difficult to say...Review date: 2007-10-30 Rating: 6 out of 10Technically, this film is excellent, and the acting is on the button. The story is powerful, and well told, and few films tell stories like this one.
Can I recommend it? Hard to say. Films try to infect the viewer with a certain mood. Unfortunately, one of the moods this film aims for is tedium and it succeeds rather too well. Worth watching, if you aren't looking for fun, thrill, action, romance, comedy, sadness, scares, horror...Stylish and unforgettable...Review date: 2007-08-28 Rating: 10 out of 10When you think of Italian films, images from La Dolce Vita, Il Postino or Life is Beautiful come up . Feelings of sentimentality. I must admit I was dubious when I sat myself down and The Consequences of Love began. But from the opening sequence I knew I was about to watch a very different type of movie. What writer/director Paolo Sorrentino has managed to create is a very atmospheric film, David Lynch-esque in places. The performances from Toni Servillo adn Olivia Magnani are superb and suprisingly moving in a very cold setting. This is a visual and narrative work of art. Believe the critics for once - don't miss this movie! Note: Try to stay away from any synopsis before you watch it... it will just ruin the experience!
