One of the greatest death metal albums.
Review date: 2004-03-07 Rating: 10 out of 10
Here we have an all time classic metal album, I have no doubt. Vital Remains have always been an excellent death metal band with not enough recognition but this will change for sure following this release. I personally prefer my metal to be secular, so I don’t like the explicit satanic, anti-Christian element which is thrown in your face even on the front cover, but that can easily be ignored when you spin this disc and hear the sheer quality coming from your speakers. Fast, pulverising death metal with a surprise element – at times, melody! And it really works. These melodic sections come quite by surprise in the middle of EVERY song on this album, highest praise must go to Dave Suzuki for providing this. This guy is a keen student of the neo-classical & fusion styles of playing lead by virtuosos such as Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore etc. & a very accomplished lead guitarist in his own right. Hear it for yourself – all songs include some of the finest lead solos/interludes ever recorded by a death metal band.
The drumming – well, not only has Suzuki found time to master lead guitar, he is one of the best drummers in this genre too! Yes, that’s right, he does all the drumming on this album – and it really is something. As good as it gets largely - the fastest blast beats, variety of fills etc.. this guy is a metal god.
The legendary Glen Benton is lead vocalist on this album, and he’s on top form throughout. Faultless.
Summing up, this has got to be one of the best death metal albums I’ve heard since following it avidly from 1988.
All you true death metal heads – old school and new, grab this one if you haven’t already got it. None of you guys will be disappointed, that’s for sure.

Super-brutal and epic Death MetalReview date: 2004-02-28 Rating: 10 out of 10Vital Remains have always been a well respected underground Death Metal outfit, but never really had a decent level of recognition from the fans of the genre. However, on this their latest album, their profile has taken a decent boost by the choice of the man who stepped in to replace departed vocalist Thorn; the infamous Glen Benton from Deicide. The music is typical Vital Remains, with ultra fast drumming, wicked riffs and solos (all courtesy of musical jack-of-all-trades Dave Suzuki) in lengthy epic songs all topped off by Benton’s ultra-brutal vocal assault. His ‘singing’ here is far better than that on the recently released new Deicide album ‘Scars Of The Crucifix’, with the final results sounding much harsher and more abrasive than they do on his main band’s release. In fact, in pretty much every aspect, Deicide come out second best to Vital Remains; despite being one of the biggest Death Metal bands in existence, they are shown the way by the ultra-blasphemous anti-Christian ethic of the guys from Rhode Island, incidently the home of horror writing legend H.P. Lovecraft. The upshot of all of this is that Vital Remains have put out probably the finest Death Metal album of the last year, on a par with leaders of the scene such as Nile and Morbid Angel. All in all, if you’re into Death Metal of the most extreme kind, but with a bit of added intelligence that not all similar bands can provide, this could well be the perfect album for you.
