A Weak Ending to The Series
Review date: 2007-04-20 Rating: 4 out of 10
I remember being really disappointed by the 3rd series after what I thought were two strong earlier ones. The writing suddenly seemed tired and strained; Lenny's chef portrayal becoming too repetitive, the double plot line of the separation and the selling of the hotel robbing the show of some of its initial charm (i.e. the playful interplay between him and his wife and the on-going hope he would make a go of the hotel business himself against adversity were strengths from the earlier shows); excessive use of canned laughter this time around to my ears (the 'My Family' syndrome as I call it); poor new supportive characters - the annoying female American chef and the rough diamond boss (bad characterisation and direction rather than bad acting); some farcial scenes, etc. Perhaps the show had run its course already and it was just one series too many. I saw this as an ill-judged attempt to spruce up the show to possibly boost ratings. All in all I think I'll focus on Series 1 & 2 instead and the warmth they brought to our screens a decade or so ago, before Hell's Kitchen made it all too real!
