Disappointing
Review date: 2008-06-15 Rating: 4 out of 10

From The Wolf Man to An American Werewolf in London, and even the Ginger Snaps trilogy, I've always been a big fan of werewolf films - until now that is. Set in Los Angeles, the plot for Cursed while not completely original is good enough. It tells of two orphaned siblings, who get bitten by a werewolf after being in a car accident, after which both siblings begin to show alarming behaviour that can only mean one thing. Unfortunately Cursed is unable to successfully build on this otherwise good start.

Werewolf and horror fans alike will probably be very disappointed with the rather tame levels of gore, and the disappointingly poor CGI werewolf, which really didn't work for me. The structure of Cursed seems to be jumbled up with the story seeming a bit incoherence at times, and expect plenty of loose ends to be left unanswered. Even with this, it's still quite predictable at times and doesn't offer much in terms of twists or turns. Cursed is comical in places and in all honestly seems like a film that's not meant to be took that seriously. It lacks depth and power, that special spark that some films have and some don't.

It's not a complete train wreak of a film and we are saved (for want of a better word) by some good acting from Christina Ricci. There are a couple of good scenes of suspense that have that Wes Craven hallmark. Plus a few scenes which are genuinely scary. And the sound track throughout is pretty good.

But overall nothing remotely special about Cursed, it watchable - just, but is let down too many times by too many things. Therefore there's not much reason for me to recommend it to you. If your looking for a werewolf film try the films I mentioned above instead.

Nothing special.

A TV producer and her teenage brother are bitten by a werewolf after a car accident and have to kill the werewolf to break the curse and prevent themselves from becoming werewolves also. An okay horror flick from Wes Craven that features many familiar faces (Milo Ventimiglia, Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Michael Rosenbaum and the R&B singer Mya) but is nonetheless nothing special. Wes Craven has made better.

Ellie, (Christina Ricci) and her brother Jimmy, (Jesse Eisenberg) are involved in a savage accident, and return with strange bites and scratches. As they try to recollect what happened to then, they start to realize that they are suddenly have strange abilities that they never had before. Ellie isn't too convinced this is happening, but Jimmy does, and his attempts to convincer her go unnoticed. When Ellie's boyfriend Jake, (Joshua Jackson) opens a new club in Los Angeles, the werewolf crashes the party, forcing everyone to deal with the creature instead of their personal problems.

The Good News: Though some may not like this one all that much, this one wasn't all that bad. I'll get to the rating later, as that's a cause here, but that was one of the few things I didn't like about it. The film does have a few great scenes of suspense that are classic Craven. The opening attack is the prime example, as the surroundings, the action, and the camera angles , combined together, make for a great scene. The jump at the end is one of the attack is one perfectly timed one as well. There is a great stalk sequence inside a parking garage that also works beautifully, and it provides the best scares and moments in the film. It's pretty clever how it works out. The attacks are pretty brutal, so it can be a joy to see some of the attacks play out.

The Bad News: Well, the film is 15, and I know that is some kind of impetus on many films. It never allows the film to be what it really can, be the all-out gore-fest and brutal werewolf film that it so desperately wanted to be. The attacks are brutal, the suspense is high, the main thing missing is the gory, brutal attacks, which unfortunately handicaps the film. The CGI used for the werewolf is a major distraction, and it seems to work against it more often than not.

The Final Verdict: The film does try hard, and it occasionally does rise above the rating restriction, but several times it does hamper the film. If you have preconceived notions about the film's rating, then go for the unrated edition, but werewolf fans owe it to at least give this one a chance. Fans of "Scream" will find a lot to like here as well.

WHY?
Review date: 2007-10-26 Rating: 2 out of 10

There was a single moment during the film where i looked up from reading a brochure for guttering, a scene with a werewolf woman attacking somebody. I don't know who was being attacked or why, or indeed who the werewolf woman was. I DID, however, order uPVC gutters for my porch.

This was a gripper from the moment i switched it OFF.
