O is a young photographer struggling to produce a book that captures the essence of female sexuality. Her lover (not her husband), Renee, introduces O to a potential benefactor who could help fund her work... on one condition... that O attend his chateau for 7 visits. These visits take O on a journey of self discovery that unlocks her hidden desires and influences her life and her photography.
I watched this film before watching the original 1975 version. I enjoyed it. It isn't a bad film in itself... for anyone interested in BDSM lifestyles it offers an interesting glimpse into a lush world of unhindered sexuality. However... for anyone who is a fan of the book or the original film... this one is certainly lacking. Having watched the original, I found this version disappointing. Though it does hold it's own charm, this film feels much more like a soft-core porn film.
Unfortunately, this film completely misses the "human" aspect of the original. The relationships between O and her Masters and the other girls that share in her plight is ignored here. Where the original delves into the psychology of it's characters and offers an informed and in depth description of a particular lifestyle or world, this film focusses much more on the sex with little explanation as to the motivations or even after effects. Also, the story is adapted from the book, so don't expect to see all those things you may have loved from the book.
The Story Of O is a wonderful introduction to the world of BDSM that is told in a truthful, unpretentious and touching light. The Story of O: Untold Pleasures... is not. It is, quite frankly, a poor immitation of a wonderful story....
But if you are looking for an erotic film that hints at darker aspects of sexuality, this is worth a watch.
