Amazon.co.uk Review

A guilty pleasure with excess horsepower, The Fast and the Furious efficiently combines time-honored male fantasies (hot cars, hot women, hot action) into a vacuous plot of crystalline purity. It's trash, but it's fun trash, in which a hotshot Los Angeles cop named Brian (Paul Walker) infiltrates a gang of street racers suspected of fencing stolen goods from hijacked trucks. The gang leader is Dom (Vin Diesel), ex-con and reigning king of the street racers, who lives for those 10 seconds of freedom when his high-performance "rice rocket" (a highly modified Asian import) hurtles toward another quarter-mile victory. Racing is street theater for a lawless youth subculture, and Dom is a star behind the wheel--charismatic, dangerous, and protective toward his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), who's attracted to Brian as the newest member of Dom's car-crazy team.

Director Rob Cohen treats this like Roman tragedy for MTV junkies, pushing every scene to adrenaline-pumping extremes; when his camera isn't caressing a spectrum of nitrous oxide-enhanced dream machines, it's ogling countless slim 'n' sexy race babes. The undercover-cop scenario cheaply borrows the split-loyalty theme perfected in Donnie Brasco; a rival Asian gang adds mystery and menace; and digital trickery is cleverly employed to explore the fuel-injected innards of the day-glo racecars. It's about as substantial as a perfume ad, but just as alluring, and for heavy-metal maniacs of any age, Diesel's superblown '69 Charger proves that Detroit muscle never goes out of style. --Jeff Shannon

A teenage boys wet dream!
Review date: 2008-09-21 Rating: 10 out of 10

fast cars, pretty women, high speed chases, guns, explosions and only the first of the trilogy! But the first is the best!

Vin diesel plays his role as a hijacker/crime boss/street racer/ father brilliantly. Paul walkers undercover cover is less belivable but still the driving scenes, the cars and the pretty women are more than enough to distract you from his poor performance.

As the title suggests this film isnt going to challenge the mind, its street racing, gang warfare and criminal intent interlaced with semi naked women and high speed pursuits.

Well worth owning its enjoyable to watch, the race scenes are good fun and the story is plausible!

a very ordinary car chase film
Review date: 2008-07-20 Rating: 4 out of 10

There are some nice looking cars and nice looking women in this film but it is by and large ordinary with characters I didn't like or dislike and stunts that have been seen before. And the guy who worked his way into a gang as un undercover policeman just didn't seem to be credible to me.
Watch The Italian Job with Michael Caine and others to see how a film with car chases can be properly made.

Brainless but fun.

Paul Walker's undercover cop infiltrates Vin Diesel's illegal car racing crew to try and find out who is behind a spate of truck hijackings. If you are a speed freak you will love this film and the cars are very snazzy as are the action sequences. The plot isn't up to much but this kind of film is more spectacle than anything else. Brainless but fun.

What can I say, the best actors in this picture where undoubtedly the Mazda rx7, closely followed by the Toyota supra, as for the human element..terrible...

The story could have been written by my 10 year old cousin, and her classmates probably could have acted out the roles better.
As usual from the mighty Vin it was another cardboard cutout performance, to say the scene were he is talking about his father lacks emotion is an understatement, perhaps they should have in listed the services of Jack Dee, who's deadpan tones probably would have been more convincing!

The ending I cannot talk about without 'giving away crucial plot lines'. Crucial more like cronic, if you don't see that one coming then you shouldn't try crossing the street unaccompanied!

In saying all that the stunts are pretty good and if you like cars (which I do) there are some very nice vehicles in this movie, definitly a hungover nobrainer Sunday afternoon movie!

I give it two stars, the Mazda and the Toyota!!
