Solid
Review date: 2007-10-20 Rating: 8 out of 10

I rented this one from Amazon and was a tad worried it would be a stinker like the previous one I watched from the 80s 'Better Off Dead' also a Cusack film. However, this one is a sure thing. A solid romantic comedy / road movie with good script and excellent performances from the actors. Good film for cuddling up on the sofa with your partner or relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.

Unexpected(ly) - damn you adverbs - successful translation
Review date: 2007-08-11 Rating: 10 out of 10

There was a slew of teen-aspirational movies at this time, as you all know. This was the princess of them all. The usual moral, but with a far more interesting journey. And with some of the great 80s quotes:

The credit-card for an emergency (search for the actual quotes). A different kind of lock.

Spontaneity has it's time and place.

John Cusack then turns out to be the best actor of his promoation (made up word - join me). He can even bring British self-pity to life. High Fidelity (though his criminal disregard for the Inspiral Carpets and The The show the dodginess of the translation...geek alert...)

A very 'slight' film

I am really surprised this has survived for so long and even more surprised that it is in the Guardian's list of 1000 'must see' films. The two main actors are good but they can do little with this plodding script - the whole thing has a dull and dreary feel. It was an insubstantial film in the 80s which does not merit being re-visited now - don't waste your time.

Classic 80's stuff

I grew up watching films like this. Weird science,Midnight run,Dirty dancing,Catholic boys,Breakfast club,War games etc etc and i think they're great fun. Real period films and some great acting. The scripts can be pretty sharp in places and watching them again today, they still made me smile and laugh out loud in places. Enjoy them for what they are.

It's a 'Sure Thing' you'll feel short-changed with this effort...

This has to be one of the worst films I've seen in some time (made worse by the fact I actually took the trouble to rent it from Amazon). I can forgive the dated eighties feel but the plodding script, lame gags and overall shoddiness were inexcusable. I'll level with you; 'romcom's are not generally my favourite type of film although when done well they can be hugely enjoyable. At least I was expecting some 'no brainer' fun - I mean, come on - all the elements are there: undergraduates at an American university, frat parties, boy-meets-girl, boy-makes-arse-of-himself when he tries to chat up girl etc. What, you may sensibly ask, could go wrong? A great deal, as it turns out. The film rapidly develops into a very tedious and largely uneventful road movie. You'd think with a director of Rob Reiner's ability at the helm (Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride plus many others) the results wouldn't have turned out so pedestrian and, well, boring but you would be mistaken. Additionally, shouldn't the lead man in this kind of caper be someone that you can warm to - even like? Cusack just comes across as smug and plain annoying and it is unfathomable why his co-star would want to give him the time of day let alone get him in the sack.
I wouldn't normally take the trouble to review such a slight and unrewarding effort as this but felt duty-bound to do so: if, like me, you were tempted by the more positive reviews of this film I implore you: resist! If you're wanting a romcom-high school, retro film fix there are plenty of other titles worthy of your attention (Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink etc. even Revenge of the Nerds!).
Finally, if you need any more persuasion to avoid this movie I should add that my missus generally LOVES this sort of film (as inane and undemanding as they are). However, on the conclusion of the film when asked her verdict she succinctly replied, "absolute garbage". So much for trying to score a few brownie points!
