Our Price: £6.61 (subject to change)
The more atmospheric, true to Dickensian-life story of the two versions.
Review date: 2008-02-22 Rating: 10 out of 10
I will not waste words in giving an unnecessarily flowery review unlike some - suffice to say that Bleak House is about a legal case involving Jarndyce and Jarndyce and is set in the Court of Chancery in London and seemingly continues forever. Written by Charles Dickens, this version contains for all to see and all who know their TV and Film history,an exceptional cast of experienced actors.Diana Rigg as Lady Dedlock portrays herself as a hard-heart but really has a heart of gold, her husband Sir Leicester played by Robin Bailey a real snob.Peter Vaughan the nasty, malicious solicitor Tulkinghorn who will not do anyone a good turn if he can do them a bad one.Dave King as Sgt George virtually blackmailed by the solicitor but enough to assault him? Denholm Elliott brilliantly cast as John Jarndyce one whom the case involves, Philip Franks and Suzanne Burden as the wonderfully timid and loved Esther and T.P.McKenna as Harold Skimpole chief scrounger and "friend" to all who will support him.Ada,Richard and Esther arrive at John Jarndyces large country house where he welcomes them and promises them a home for ever.
As with all Dickens novels the plot leads on through Londons villanous fog-bound streets where the poor die daily of cold and starvation while the rich get richer, until the case eventually reaches its final shocking conclusions.

Enjoyable.......But the remake is Better!!!Review date: 2007-06-05 Rating: 6 out of 10I decided to purchase the Original Bleak House after watching the remake.
This production moves at a slower pase than the remake and the camera work is done very modern in the remake than the Original.
Which is understandable when you think that this production was made 20 years before the remake.
Having said that, it is enjoyable to watch but I found the remake keeps you interested. Maybe because it moves alot quicker.
Give it a go. I dont regret the purchase.
But if you are deciding which of the two movies you should buy. I recommend the remake.Classic BBC Dickens - drama at its bestReview date: 2006-01-25 Rating: 10 out of 10While this might not quite reach the heights of the 2005 BBC Serial version of dramatised masterpiece, it gets pretty close. The series is divided into roughly 50 minute episodes and includes all of the key plot details in its 418 minutes. The settings, characters and pace are all superb. Top marks to Denholm Elliott's masterly Mr Jarndyce, Diana Rigg as a dignified and tragic Lady Dedlock, and the wonderful Peter Vaughan (even better than Charles Dance) as Tulkinghorn. Esther's part is less central, her character more timid and several of the subplots and characters are ommitted. However, there are no weak links and although Ada, Rick and Smallweed perhaps get less meaty roles than their 2005 counterparts, Mr Guppy, Crook, Skimpole and Miss Flite all compare very favourably. The direction allows the action to flow steadily and tension is sustained if not quite with the same urgency, or X-Files style scene shifting technique of the more recent version. Great location contrasts between dark, dirty Chancery London, gloomy Chesney Wold and the countryside at Bleak House. A delight. Such a pity it is only available as an American import, Region 1 (USA) DVD.
