Amazon.co.uk Review

Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with Chasing Amy, a film he wrote and directed, he made Clerks, a $27,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses Clerks as an audition piece, demonstrating that he not only can handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

"Dante you sock-smoker"
Review date: 2008-12-01 Rating: 10 out of 10

"I'm not even supposed to be here!" Says Dante, who must replace his boss at the convenience store on his day off even though he's got an imporant hockey game at lunchtime.

Witty dialogue, annoying customers, and perplexing twentysomething existentialism ensues ie Star Wars etc. Director Kevin Smith's breakthrough award winning movie just goes to show you that with as little as £10,000.

This is a stark, vulgar, real comedy that looks at life from the vantage point of someone who has grown up a little. It's funny, because it's real. Kevin's co-producer Scott Mosier also takes 2 small roles in the film. Mosier plays a stoner who is knicknamed Snowball because of a sex practice he likes. Scott also plays an irate customer who gets mad that Dante closed the store to play hockey on the roof. This irate customer bullies his way into the game. And when Dante gets fined for selling cigarettes to small children (even though he's innocent?) and a college girl accidentally has ding-dong with a dead guy in the bathroom, the authorities are left to wonder, "What kind of a store are you running here, anyway?" There is nothing dirty or nasty that happens on-screen. But due to adult language and frank discussions of adult subjects, this film is not for general audiences.

ESSENTIAL, NO QUESTION

Clerks is one of those films much like The Lost Boys and Pulp Fiction; a celebration of pop culture and cult classic that paved the way for many imitations.

The first movie to feature the infmaous Jay and Silent Bob has been widely acclaimed as an indie cult classic; often cited as one of those movies you HAVE to see before you die.

You won't see a film quite like it, ingenius in it's simplicity; it depicts two slackers wasting their potential in a convenience store and putting the world to rights. Loveable characters Randall and Dante will live forever in your mind as two of the most realistic and hilarous characters put to film, everyone can relate to them and everyone will know somebody just like them.

The first film to bless us with the fantastic Jason Mewes who is easily one of the biggest show-stealer since Alan Rickman in Die Hard and Robin Hood will have you quoting his every line!

Pop culture enthusiasts and lovers of indie flicks NEED to have this in their collection, you will not be disappointed!

Am i missing something here?

Dont believe the hype with this one. Watching this film was one of the longest 90 minutes of my life - tedious isn't the word! How this film has warrented an average 5 star rating is beyond me. The only mildly amusing part in this film is the discussion about the contractors working on the death star in star wars. I recently heard Jonathan Ross reviewing that Clerks II was a bit boring. Surely it couldn't have been more boring than the orignal! Avoid spending 90 minutes on this - life's too short!

Budget comedy film makers: this is your gold standard

Imagine your name is Kevin Smith, you're about 21, you work in a video store and you decide to make your own film. Here is the result. Witty, zany, outrageous, foul-mouthed, black & white and well worth two hours of your time. It's not a perfect film, it has a couple of bits that don't work, but it's deservedly a classic.
"Clerks" is the day in a life of two losers, both determined to break free but doomed to loserdom. The action centres on the convenience store where a succession of grumpy, demanding and middle-aged customers run the gauntlet of the loser-heroes' idea of service, while girlfriends ramp up the chaos and the neighbourhood druggies play a foolish chorus. Each comic episode builds towards a gross-out finale that wraps the losers' day up to a perfect finale.
This film is basically about loser teenagers in dead end jobs. If you are a loser teenager in a dead end job, you will still find this hilarious, but you may not get the joke.

clerks is independent film god Kevin Smith's first major product. say what you will, clerks is ingenious. clever script, simple but great story, relatable characters and a good soundtrack are included in this great 3 disc set. the snowball effect is a great documentary and the MTV spots with Jay and Silent Bob are great little skits. a peice of Sundance history and a very funny, very rude mini masterpiece. NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED!
