Not "Pretty in Pink"
Review date: 2006-04-17 Rating: 8 out of 10
If you're like me you found this film because you loved "Pretty in Pink". A read of the synopsis will suggest it's basically the same film - rich guy meets poor girl, friends disapprove. But it's not. A darker and more serious film. Don't buy it for a jolly piece of '80s nostalgia but it's worth watching, even if only to see Molly Ringwald lifted from the High School context.

a bit of a turkey - curiosity interest onlyReview date: 2006-04-13 Rating: 6 out of 10If you're a fan of 80s/bratpack movies, you may have been led to this page. Please don't be misled into thinking this is in the same league as The Breakfast Club, St Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink etc... because it simply isn't. There's a reason the aforementioned movies are fondly remembered and were successful at the time and 'Fresh Horses' isn't and wasn't. The plot is wafer thin, the acting is patchy at best and the general feel of the film is one of apathy. You just don't care if they end up together. The vicious, murderer husband 'Green' never gets any worse than blocking Andrew McArthy's path for a few seconds and being a bit unpleasant. Molly Ringwald as 'Jewel' is bland. I think she's supposed to be a sultry temptress but she ends up looking more like a sulky princess. This IS worth buying merely out of curiosity (I mean, it's cheap enough right?) and you get a look at a very young Ben Stiller. For fans of Molly, stick with her better known efforts, or 'fatal love' - that's worth watching. For fans of Andrew McArthy, ditto, and especially avoid 'Year of the Gun' with him alongside Sharon Stone - truly painful.
