Sports but not as we know it.
Review date: 2008-09-20 Rating: 10 out of 10
It seems today that all im reveiwing are sports films, but thats not all that my vast movie collection comprises of. How-ever as a medium to express hardship, underacheivement, cultural and physical differnces the sports genre tops it all. With great movies like Varsity blues, Remember the titans and the longest yard all taking on a gridiron american football type stance, COach carter acheives something different a basketball film!
But this isnt just basketball this film is phenominal in its story of hardship and a school system designed to fail. The film protrays one mans struggle to bring back glory to his old high school bball team, his undying love for his home town and the notion that in our youth the country will succeeed.
This film tackles the issues like the others listed in the begining but it also takes on something else, the modern gang culture, the class system and above all a thinking that we are all incontrol of our future no matter where we grow up or where we go to school we can acheive.
This film is a great pick me up film, it makes you appreciate what youve got and how hard you work for it and leaves you feeling warm inside.

Good movie with a strong messageReview date: 2008-09-07 Rating: 8 out of 10Sporting drama based on a true story. Samuel L. Jackson plays Coach Carter, who takes on the job of coaching unruly inner city high school basketball team the Richmond Oilers, who only won four games in the whole of the previous season. By gaining their respect, teaching them the importance of discipline and instilling in them the values of teamwork and respect for authority, he crafts them into a team that becomes the best high school basketball team in the region, going through the whole of the season unbeaten. But when members of the team start slipping behind on their academic grades and classroom attendance, he suspends the whole team, causing a scandal that attracts local media attention. A film with a strong message about the importance of education and another excellent performance from Samuel L. Jackson as the Coach Carter of the title. The film also has good performances from the young men playing the members of the Richmond Oilers team and a favourable turn from R&B singer Ashanti as the pregnant girlfriend of one of the team's members. Although the film was a touch melodramatic at moments I still found this to be a film that interested and held my attention throughout, despite the fact that the film was almost two and a half hours long. A good movie.
brilliantReview date: 2008-07-14 Rating: 10 out of 10one of the best films i have had the pleasure to watch, the film has depth which might not usually be associated with a sporting story, the reason for this is simply although the film is of a sporting nature, more important issues are the focal point of the feature. Samuel l Jackson proves to be simply superb as does the supporting cast, a film for a wide range of people, i defy anyone who says they havent enjoyed this filmGreat story, inspirational and most of all true!!!Review date: 2008-04-24 Rating: 8 out of 10You don't have to like/love basketball to enjoy this film, this film is first and foremost true and truly an inspirational joy to watch.
Good solid acting with a good soundtrack too, I have to say that this is one of those wonderful films that you wish did not have to end, you get an update as to how some of the guys on the team have gone on to do good things in their lives, something which their coach was trying to install in the team and not just coach them to play basketball well and win games.
Watch this and feel the full force of this excellent film, it really does hit the spot and is not just another movie, it's one that sticks in the mind and may even make you think about some of things you can do to better yourself and in so doing make your life better.a really class filmReview date: 2008-04-01 Rating: 8 out of 10i was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Having put off watching it for as long as possible over at my boyfriend's because i thought it looked pretty boring, i eventually gave in and was in for a treat. Samuel L Jackson gives a momentous performance as the coach trying to train a group of boys who don't care about their school work, only sports. I must admit, i did wipe a tear away towards the end because the story really moved me and i hope it moves you too.
