Redcaps is very well written, touching a wide range of topics- some of them taboo at the time. Redcaps also shows what a fine actor John Thaw is-his sergeant is very much a dour army man, very different from Regan or Morse.

John Thaw’s first staring roleReview date: 2006-01-08 Rating: 6 out of 10I have been waiting impatiently for Redcap to be released, I watched it when first aired in 1964. It rapidly became one of my favourite series but it’s re-issue has turned out something of a mixed blessing.First it is studio bound, but that is to be expected and probably recorded on Video instead of film with below par image quality. Also there is a certain sameness about the plots that was not so noticeable when watched one episode a week.
John Thaw is first class as Sergeant Man, special investigator from the military police, and throughout the series we meet early performances of many actors who later become stars, young fresh and finding their feet.
However what is disturbing is the vast change in attitudes to foreigners since the series was first aired, the somewhat colourful language occasionally used by soldiers about the local inhabitants in Cyprus, Borneo and Germany are not the current idea of political correctness.
However as a reminders of the first performances on the road to characters like Regan, Morse, Kavanagh etc this is a valuable historic record.
DC ReaganReview date: 2006-01-02 Rating: 6 out of 10This series is both a nostalgic look at the old army (SMG's lark spur radios and wearing number 2 's on guard) and an interesting insight into what the young jack Reagan would have been like. OK but borrow your mates copy.don't miss outReview date: 2005-09-30 Rating: 8 out of 10No, not the Tamzin Outhwaite post-Eastenders vehicle,
but John Thaw's pre-Sweeney offering, as he stars as
John Mann, a special investigator for the Royal
Military Police. It really is a quite compelling drama
series despite it creaky 1964 black and white telly
origins. It's also supposed to be set in far flung
places across the world, but doesn't seem to leave the
london studio, and there's elements of Z-Cars type
villany to behold too. Thaw himself looks no older
than 12, and is years away from his portrail of the
brash boozy belter, Regan. Worth a gander for familiar
faces and dialogue driven drama, if nothing else
