Thanks to a previous reviewer I was able to buy this 12 part comedy series for viewing in BRITAIN. A must for fans of Bewitched, we see grown up witch Tabitha Stephens out working for a TV studio and trying to live a normal life as far as possible.
Some plot changes have been made. Adam, originally 3 years younger that Tabitha, is now her BIG brother - but he is still mortal and fills the role of 'Darren' to Tabitha's 'Samantha' - the sensible, non magic sidekick who gets caught in the cross fire. Another edition is Aunt Minerva, stepping into the high heels of legendary Endora - but since Samantha was an only child, where did magical Minerva spring from? Well, perhaps she is an honourary "aunt" - or just another Aunt of Samantha's - but like Endora she causes chaos and, with her eye for men, can give Blanche for the Golden Girls a run for her money when it comes to gently saucy lines.
The 12 episodes are as charming as the original TV series and it is a shame that more were not made. Perhaps the move away from the cosy comedy of 'Bewitched' and other shows to the more biting 'Taxi' and 'Cheers' meant that this gentle show did not find the audience it deserved? Lisa Hartman is a pretty Tabitha with a look of Elizabeth Montgomery about her, and a lovely late-70's wardrobe right out of Charlies' Angels. Big brother Adam is played admirably by David Ankrum whilst the role of the male chauvinist TV star whom Tabitha works for is played with the right amount of smarm and charm by Robert Ulrich. Karen Morrow has fun as Aunt Minerva and the harrassed TV studio boss is played by Mel Stewart.
Add to your collection if you are a Bewitched fan - and watch out for old favourites like Dr Bombay and the neighbours from hell, The Kravitz - all reprising their original TV roles.

As my daughter has and loves all the first 5 seasons of Bewitched, I thought it likely she would go for this 2 DVD set. She says it's really good, funny and just like Bewitched - except that mortal non-magic brother Adam [David Ankram] replaces dad Darrin. Even Endora is in the series, well actually it's guardian witch Aunt Minerva [Karen Morrow] but the character's slightly in sympathy with grandma Endora. Naturally mortal Adam disapproves of his sister's use of witchcraft, while witch Aunt Minerva encourages it. Plus there's mortal boss Marvin Decker [Mel Stewart] taking Larry Tate's niche. The series only ran for one season, probably as 1977 was too soon after the eighth [1972] season of Bewitched for 'Tabitha' to take off - in fact the real `Tabitha' [the Murphy twins] weren't even into their teens when this was filmed [although Erin Murphy still gets royalty cheques for her photo shown in the opening credits - and this is the only real survivor from the original Bewitched cast in 'Tabitha', other than the Kravitz's and Dr Bombay's welcome guest appearances. The DVD picture quality and dolby sound is good on a 14" TV screen [the DVD case says 'remastered in high definition'], run time is 325 minutes. It's in colour and like other reviewers say, my Amazon reseller Tabitha DVDs are region free, with no region stated on the DVD packaging [although our NTSC Bewitched DVD sets are strictly Region 1: USA NTSC only]. Screen size is naturally standard 1.33 to 1 (ie. not widescreen) and there's no alternative languages/subtitles.
The Tabitha here is a 22 year old adult career minded witch (played with aplomb by Lisa Hartman). This DVD has all 12 episodes of the series, plus the relatively duff original Tabitha pilot that starred Liberty Williams and Bruce Kimmel as the Stephens siblings (this is the `special feature' and is the only extra other than a single sheet leaflet detailing the episodes). The series failed probably because fans were rather miffed that Erin Murphy wasn't Tabitha, and they even wrote to Elizabeth Montgomery to complain [who had nothing to do with the series]. In fact quite a few of the crew that produced Bewitched were involved and Bernard Fox [Dr Bombay], Sandra Gould [Gladys Kravitz] and George Tobias [Abna Kravitz] did make guest appearances - in probably the best episodes. But the lack of Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick Sargent / Dick York was simply too much for many bewitched fans and the series folded after just one season. However my daughter really enjoyed this spin-off series and she has got a lot of NTSC entertainment for her tenner - and being a Dick York fan she chose it over Sargent's first season (season 6) of bewitched. Her synopsis: `It's really good and it has got a few new ideas compared to Bewitched. The pizza palace is really cool and Dr Bombay was funny. There's kind of a love interest with Tabitha's aloof work colleague Paul, but it's a bit annoying that he never becomes her boyfriend [perhaps that would have been season 2]. Tabitha's boss is nice as well (yes he's a bit like Larry Tate).". She even thinks Tabitha is a `tiny bit better than Bewitched - which is probably due to the better special effects' (she hasn't seen the latter seasons 7 to 8 of Bewitched though). So a definite thumbs up for `Tabitha' from a Bewitched fan. Naturally the classic 'Bewitched' seasons one to five are essential pre-viewing.
