Amazon.co.uk Review

Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made Drew Barrymore's Ever After so effortlessly engaging. As romantic comedies go, Hitch doesn't offer any big surprises, but as a date movie it gets the job done with amiable ease and style. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

The lovable Smith is here againin charming comedy
Review date: 2008-08-28 Rating: 8 out of 10

Will Smith (Independence Day) stars as Hitch, a date doctor who helps guys create opportunities to gain courage with women. When Sara and Albert come along, his principles are tested to the extreme.

With an excellent first hour, with slick comedy and likable characters, Hitch tails off into the cliché side of relationships towards the end but still generates a feel good motive to make an enjoyable funny romantic comedy.

The lovable Will Smith is again so likable in his own unique way as the sophisticated date doctor, smart and easily the funniest gut throughout, though Kevin James (The King of Queens) is just as funny, none more so than the dancing sequences and his general clumsiness.

The whole cast is great, and form good onscreen chemistry, and do their best with some clumsy dialogue. The last half an hour or so made me feel sicker than Hitch in the fish scene, a complete dramatic insanity with the whole small world and misunderstandings and coincidental meetings used, which is a shame as it had the potential to be a full length slick and sophisticated romantic comedy but was ruined by the everyday use of clichés.

The first hour is excellent though, with a sharp and precise look at the meeting between the sexes, a true look at how guys and girls hit it off, or find it difficult to talk to each other. Packed with humour but an accurate ideology gets the film started in the right way, exciting and realistic and also very funny. The whole concept of the film will make you smile and chuckle along and you will feel slightly let down come the end.

The film is a rare type of successful romantic comedies by having physical and scripted humour which are genuinely funny, which is very rare in modern films which overuse one or the other.

Hitch is a smart natured romantic comedy with a good look at the interaction between guys and girls with a good natured approach, containing a good use of humour which is let down by cheesy dialogue and scenarios in the last half an hour.

Great fun, sweet and romantic
Review date: 2008-07-04 Rating: 10 out of 10

I loved this film. Really well cast, think Will Smith is gorgeous, Kevin James is fabulous and all the other characters fitted in well. Don't agree with the two star reviews that there are hardly any laughs, makes me laugh out loud all the way through. Maybe that means I'm easily pleased, but I don't care. I love a good romcom, and this ticks all the boxes. Yes, it is very American and cheesey but it makes you feel good, and what is wrong with that these days? I'd recommend it, plus the soundtrack is great too.

You'll Fall in Love with This Movie

Alex Hitchens, "Hitch" to his friends (Will Smith), has a wonderful job. He helps men get the women of their dreams by giving them dating tips and arranging situations where they can meet their current crushes. Dubbed the "Date Doctor," Hitch operates by word of mouth.

His latest client is Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), a nerdy accountant who is deeply in love with socialite Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). Even though Albert is way out of Allegra's league, Hitch begins to work his magic.

Meanwhile, Hitch has met society columnist Sara Melas (Eva Mendes) and is doing his best to win her. Sara is a tough cookie to crack, however, because her job reporting the break ups of others has made her extremely cynical. Sara's pursuit of Allegra and Albert only makes things worse. Will anyone find true love?

I'm sure if I describe this romantic comedy as predictable, it won't come as any surprise to you. I had the ultimate ending figured out long before the story really got going. However, I was left wondering how exactly they'd reach that outcome.

Even more importantly, the journey along the way was fun. While I didn't laugh as much as my friends, I was often smiling when I wasn't cringing. I'm not a fan of comedy from embarrassment, and that's some of the humor here. However, watching Hitch in action is fun. He is so smooth it is remarkable.

Finally, the characters made me care about the outcome. Sara was the only one it was hard to warm up to, and by the end I cared for her, too. The acting was great, which really helped.

This is one of those rare romantic comedies that everyone seems to enjoy. So if you are looking for a light film, give this one a chance.

Big Will fights off the cheese...

This film is superb. "Hitch" is the nickname of Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens played by Will Smith who provides a consultancy service with a difference. He will give advice on matters of the heart for lonely, lovesick bachelors, who are desperate to make the first move, on the lady of their dreams. He careful screens his clients, thus ensuring that their intentions towards their target ladies, are honourable and worthy. Sara on the other hand, is the career driven gossip columnist for a New York tabloid, always in the know, and one step ahead of the rest of the paparazzi pack, when hunting down the latest celebrity rumours. She and Hitch meet up at a stylist New York club, where Hitch proves he can take a huge gulp of his own medicine, by charming Sara into coming out with him. the story really gets going, when the two main characters get their wires crossed, when Hitch's latest client, is the bumbling but cute Albert, who is pining after millionaire socialite Allegra Cole, someone who Sara is all too desperate to get on her front page day after day. mayhem ensues. well worth renting out.
